155k hdj81
there is a hdj81 near me in the classifieds for $15,500. It has 155000km. Would you get it? What should I look out for? What kinds of things will need to be done in the upcoming months, years, now? How long will it last? When the engine dies can I replace it? This would be my first vehicle, and I want it to last me for decades to come.

I can tell you that having the engine's big end bearings (BEBs) replaced is pretty much a must when purchasing an 81. They are a weak link in the engine. After researching alternative engine options for my own petrol-powered FZJ80, I can tell you a replacement 1HD-T engine for an 81 is HUGE money, because they are quite scarce outside Japan or Australia. Picture CAD$6000-$10000 for a low mileage used one... IF you can find one. The upside is that if you look after the one you have, there's no reason to believe you won't get another 400,000kms out of it. And when it eventually does get tired, you can rebuild it and get another half-million out of it. My $0.02 is I wouldn't be scared by 155kms on that drivetrain. __________________ '94 lockered FZJ80 Get over it.
