Brief starter grind after engine start
Ok, did a bunch of reading and understant contacts and plunger replacement. Will do that if I can solve this issue, or may be forced to buy a new one.
The Problem: Just bought a 96 and it has started every turn of the key with no hesitation, until 2 days ago and then again today. After some rubber mallet counseling it started again. However, after every start there is what seems to be a brief high pitched grind and "sheeen." I don't really know what "sheeen" actually means but if I were to try and make the sound it would sound kind of like that. I pulled the starter and inspected the contacts, the curved one is worn and will need replacement in the future, other is fine and plunger and spring seem clean, and voltage checks good on start. Interestingly, the PO or their mechanic put a washer between the starter and mounting plate on both mounting bolts. I replaced without those and the sound got worse, and even seemed that the fly wheel was occasionally clipping the starter splines in the early part of engine run up. So I put washers back for time being. I am guessing that the starting gear is not retracting properly or fast enough after engine turnover, has anyone experienced or heard of this situation. Thanks, Dave |

you have a good nose for troubleshooting, I'd bet a rebuild is in your future. CDan is the parts guy, IIRC the cost of a new toyota starter is up there, and a rebuild kit of toyota parts is a small fraction of that cost- DIY and

I know the rebuild kit from the locals (don't remember who) was about $50 for the plunger and 2 contacts. Haven't been able to get CDan on PM this weekend his box is full, and I just found his 800 number a few hours ago, but I will wait til tomorrow to try him again.
A Refab is $130, but anticipate it will crap out after the first sandy mud hole here in Jax. |

I mentioned earlier that someone put washers on the mounting bolts as spacers probably to minimize the grinding sound.
has anyone ever had to shim a starter for any reason? Dave |
