Hi/lo shifter question

Good day folks!! I'm still learning the ways of my new FJ and i have a few questions about the hi lo linkage.
it says when driving to stop vehicle, then shift to N(neutral) then move from Hi to Lo as needed.
So i tested this out with the vehicle off while i was parked and it shifted fine, but then i also noticed that when i shifted to drive (vehicle still off) it still shifted in the same manner and even in park the same thing happened.
Question is -is this normal? and if i were in fact driving the vehicle would i have been able to do this?

if engine running and in drive you will grind gears hence the reason for neutral shift while engine on.....

Yes and no, if there is no tension on the gears it can be shifted in any gear. When in park, most times there will be tension, load from the park pawl holding the rig in place, so you most likely wont be able to shift it. With the motor running and in any gear there will be drive tension on the gears, so it would be hard to shift and will grind. The best method is to shift with the trans in neutral, that said, my shop floor is very flat, so commonly just shift the transfer into neutral to roll the rig around. Be aware that when the transfer is in neutral it will roll freely, even if the trans is in park.

That's actually my biggest grievance with the engineers of this vehicle. If my daughter decides to play with that particular gear lever when left alone in the car for whatever reason, things could get ugly. There should be some kind of lockout, like the tranny shifter has.

I too use it to move the truck around- much easier than finding the keys or something to defeat the tranny lockout.

Use the parking brake if you have unattended kids in the vehicle.

or go to prison if you have unattended kids in the vehicle:

A family on my parent's block had a child who disengaged the parking brake and the suv backed out of the driveway and ran over/killed a little boy.

Also, some cites fine parents a $1000 for leaving kids in cars, so even if you do it for just a minute, the sphincter police might catch you!

But I'll forgive you B, I'm sure you probably didn't know better because after all, seatbelts weren't even standard issue back when you were in the child bearing age bracket.
