Engine Knocking question?

94 LC 1FZ with a distinct knocking sound. The owner has been driving it this way for over 10k miles...how serious is this?

I believe he has a bent rod.... is it possible to replace just the rod or am I in for something major? I know someone that replaced a bearing and rod on a 2F engine and has been driving it for years without problem.

You can replace just the rod and bearings.

Is there any write up on this procedure?

IIRC, LX_Treme removed the rods and installed new pistons and bearings with the engine in the vehicle. You should be able to find his thread here in the 80-Section. Do a search for threads started by author=LX_Treme

Of course, I recommend figgering out why you have a bent rod before doing any repair work. Did the HG fail? Did a cylinder take on water?

The special tools you would need to do the swap are readily available at a parts store. Ring compressor. Plasti-Gauge.

"Did the HG fail? Did a cylinder take on water?"

I am not sure...the engine is running fine (except for the knock)

However the radiator just sprang a leak...what should I be looking for regarding HG failure?

Fixed the radiator....been told to check compression to see if the rings have gone bad or if there is water in the cylinder? There is no white smoke or any tell tell signs...

Why do you believe it's a bent rod? That's not a common problem on the 1FZ.

I would classify replacing a rod as major and would recommend determining what is wrong with the motor before taking it apart?
