Adjustable caster front leading arm
I came up with this idea several years ago and have slooowly over the years designed it and started to machine it. It is just a concept and I may never finish it so for correction I would recommend plates from Christo Slee or Landtank.
This design allows for 23 degrees caster total adjustment. 5 degrees for the low riders and 18 degrees for lifted cruisers. That is from zero; not from the Toyota specs. As far as I can tell in the stock position it is about 1 5/8 inches lower than the stock arm. I did not machine the rear portion of the arm yet although I have made the drawing and coded it. I apologize for posting it in this condition since much of it will probably be hard to figure out. Disclaimer: I have no idea if this will work or not. I have not a clue what I am looking at...but is sure is pretty looking. The camera angles don't do it for me.

Thank you. Maybe another picture will help. Keep in mind this is just the front half. The second picture shows the start of the bottom where I welded the curved gauge part to. It is 1/2" plate and is the part that would be slid on. I drilled and tapped a couple of holes at an angle for jack bolts. These would just be used to adjust the center section (axle) for caster alignment, then removed. This is also the part that would be slid on. As I mentioned it is about 1 5/8 inches lower than stock. For what its worth, the passenger side would be very different. It does not need a gauge, and would be much shorter for clearance. Another reason this one sticks so far forward is I wanted to be able to have the lock bolts on either side of the arm and to make the arm adjustable (alignment) without removing anything. The bolts in the center would not be accessible and do not tighten. I put them there to help to help keep the arm from spreading from twisting. the only sad thing about all this is that i believe Bill's truck hasn't moved since i have been a member of Mud. He keeps adding all these projects, like dual snorkels, alternator brackets and now some crazy caster time machine!!

If you cant remember when Bill's truck was mobile you haven't been here long enough.
Bill, have you thought about wristing one side of the arms to increase articulation ?, ( Think early bronco arms ) I know that you use (Now that was funny) this for expedition travel but wonder if you have played with that idea as well. Yes I did think about it. Thanks for the reminder. At the time I had dreamed up a screwy joint design for the rear control arm that "might" relieve some pressure on the bushings; but it seemed the consensus was the rear was fine so I dropped that idea and any thoughts of trying to work a joint in to the front arm. The only Bronco ones I saw used a bolt and a pin and I never liked the idea of a road rig with a pin. I always felt it would wear pretty quick. Two shoulder bolts, a bearing and a bushing might be good but would take more time to undo for off road. Of course I know very little about suspension design so this might not be what you were talking about. Bill __________________ If it ain't broke, fix it until it is. 97 40th |
