80 amp VS. 90 amp alternator?
I called toyota about my alternator and they cannot tell which one i have even with a vin. Can i put the 90 amp into my rig if the existing one is only 80 amp...or vice versa?

It's been covered before. Short answer: 90amp won't fit; you need the 80.

WHat's up man? LOng time no talk man. I was thinking that as well, but I kinda trusted that the toyota parts guy knew what he was talking about...you know. I remember reading somewhere about this topic online. BTW, how have you been? __________________ 1992 FJ80 200,000 miles and going. 15" Rims running with 31x1050R15 BFG AT/KO |

How can one tell what amperage alternator he has? I called toyota, gave them my vin, and they still don't know. They said that according to our geographic area,(minnesota),....that it'd be a 90 amp for sure. BEcause it gets colder.. Can anyone confirm this?

Hmmm, even if you and your cruiser are now in Minnesota, was it 'born' there or did it migrate there?
My cruiser was shipped here to Missouri and originally purchased here and lived here it's entire life (so far), but it started in Japan and shipped to a port in Oregon. So, I agree with you that it is odd a dealer can't tell you from the VIN, but it also seems odd that they would make a guess based on where it is now located. On another note, you should definitely do a search. If nothing else, look into the custom bracket that allows you to install a 150amp alternator from a sequoia

If you are even thinking about upgrading definitely use PHOTOMAN's bracket and plug kit.

80A alternators have an external fan
90A alternators have an internal fan, and the positive terminal is on the side (IIRC) Most 3FE 80s were equipped with the 80A. Some had the 90A. BTW, Photoman's bracket for a Sequoia alternator only works for a 1FZ, if I'm not mistaken. __________________ Lane Anderson 1991 TRD FJ80, Red, 252k, 3FE Powa ----- Lifted, bumpered, Slee'd, flareless, LineX, 31" BFGs, Dual batts, CB, HIRs, OBA, GPS, OEM CHMSL, roof lights, kickin' sound system, 2-seater - 10 MPG!! __________________________________________ Quote:

Or better, call CDan. He'll get you a screamin' deal. AND he most likely has one in stock, whereas most dealers have to order one in.
