Spare tire removal with rear end damage... (help)

Short story: PO had a 'fender bender' and now I'm driving around with a 15 year old "brand new" tire because the thing that's supposed to be inserted through the hole above the bumper doesn't go in because the hole was pushed up above the bottom of the tailgate.

I had the bumper pulled back a bit so that it is now no longer holding the tire in one place, but I cannot figure out how to lower the tire (or replace it with a newer one -- which is my ultimate goal - and raise that one is its place).

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Unbolt the cross member that holds the spare. May want to support the tire, it will probably fall when the last bolt is removed!

bend a long lag bolt into sort of an off set "L" shape and spin the bolt with bolt spinner of choice. You may be able to remove the whole spare tire cross member if you want to work on the hoist mechanism in a more hospitable environement (ie not on you back between the bumper and axle.

Hmmm....a wire tent stake in a drill might actually work as well if not better...

I, very voraciously, cut the chains holding the tire with a sawzall. Now I'm making an interior mount. You get such a better departure angle when it removed.
