pully dohickey thingy what is it ??

on a 3FE engine beside the a\c comp there is a roller? the a/c belt ride just on top of it there is no grove for the belt it just sits ther what is it's function? should this be spinning with the engine running? Mine is not and I have this rubbing noise up front. I am thinking this is the culprit. It make more noise with the truck around 1700 to 2000 rpm and when I leave my foot off the accel the noise stops.

I have checked the wheel bearing and repacked them. Nothing in there leads me think there is a problem there. Calipers and rotors look O.K. Even had a mech look at these parts so I feel they are O.K.

thanks D

decavo,

are you referering to the A/C idler pulley? If so, check if everything is alligned proper and flush. Quick optical check from on top should suffice. If the bearing is dry it would make a screeching sound at or above certain RPM. Sprinkle some water on the belts and see if that makes it go away or lessens the noise. Worth a try

Is it seized, or can you spin it easily by hand?

Just went and checked on my own rig out of curiousity and the d*mn thing's pretty much seized up!

VERY hard to rotate by hand, even with the belt pulled away from it.

That's the AC idler pulley. When the compressor kicks on you'll see the belt ride on that pulley. With the engine running and AC off, it JUST misses the roller.

Mine's been missing since I bought the truck, with no ill effects. That being said, I assume Toyota put it there for some reason, so I would be interested.
