Warning Lights

I have a 92 80 with 189,303 miles, and the A/T temp, brake and the red light above the volt meter flicker and sometimes stay on for a short period.

I did a search and most everything was leading me to beleive that the alt was going, but most threads were on 93 and newer rigs. They were also stating that the oil can light was on, rather than the volt light.

So, is my thought correct? Is the alt going, and the light sequence is the same as the newer models?

Thanks WoodyFJ80

Your thinking is correct for a 91-92.

Get it tested, but yes, likely the alt.

What's the voltage gauge doing during this? Low I expect?

It does not seem to move. Trying to watch and drive, but I did not see the voltage drop on the meter. It seems to stay right about 14 or so. Any thoughts since it does not drop.
Thanks for the input. WoodyFJ80

When your alt and battery pass their tests, start checking grounds. Body ground by battery, engine ground and grounds behind dash.

Any Luck Woody? I am experiencing the same problem with the warning lights. I only get it during long highway hauls. The temps are good, oil pressure fine, battery fine? My mechanic says to ignore it as he is a good friend and was along in a trip when it occurred. He did mething that it could be a ground issue or perhaps a soft code...my Cruiser is from Japan and I have not had it scanned yet! Just wondering if you were able to solve the problem!

Dashboard christmas tree lights are charging system related. 90% of the time it is the alternator. It COULD be a host of other things, and certainly get your battery checked or simply replace it, but it is most likely your alternator.

If it was the alternator, wouldn't I expect the same flashing lights to come on all the time? It has only happened twice on long trips. I always thought that all the lights would flicker too? As it stands, only the 3 warning lights in the bottom left corner and the one on top right light up...along with the green and red turbo lights.

If the lights are BRAKE; A/T; CHARGE, then it is charging system related. I would suspect alternator, battery, and related connections.

Update 9-9-08

Well had the alt tested and it is TOAST! I am running on batt. power for now it seems. Luckily it is a brand new batt. I was putting out low amps, 1 to 1.3, according to the test. I am ordering a new one from CDan today. The test was done at A-Zone. I let ya know after replacing how she does.

Update 9-21-08

Well, after some confusion on which alt. I had, I got things in order and replaced the alt. with an 80 amp OME, and she is all BETTER. The volt gauge or meter is staying right at 14 v. There is no dropage of the needle, it is a constant volt. She seems to even run smoother, as if saying thanks.

Thanks again to everyone who gave input and to Cdan on the part(s). This site sure makes things easier to do and on the pocket book.

John (WoodyFJ80)

Me...same thing also.

I was having the same issue with my 92. I replaced my alt. with one from Toyota. My LC still does the same thing as before. No change at all.
I'm gonna get my battery checked tomorrow and see if it's that. I just had this battery replaced about a month ago. I have a die hard gold....if that helps?...

I did have my previous alt. tested at two different locations and they said it was dead. But with the new one installed, my voltage is at about 12.71.... I know that's really low. My lights usually come on when I come to a complete stop, and sometimes the engine cuts off. Could it be that I got a bad reman. alt from toyota? Could it be that I got my belts on wrong? I do have the FSM, but couldn't find a page that said where the location of the belts are.
I checked all connections and ground wires, they all seem to be fine. I think if it is the alt., I'm gonna have a heck of a time trying to get toyota to warranty it.
Any more ideas?

Entirely possible.

If it were me I'd pull it and get it tested.

I don't see why that would be the case; you think they're somehow going to claim it's your fault or something?
