REAL TIME HELP : rear axle bearings

Ok, so I'm finishing up the rear axle pm and trying to set the rear axle bearing preload. I torqued the locknut to 43 ft-lbs (twice, rotating in between), per the FSM. Then even without loosening the locknut the preload it too light (the force required to rotate the wheel is less than what is listed in the FSM). Per the FSM the force required to rotate the wheel should be between 5.3-12.4 lbsf. It is only taking about 3 lbsf to rotate the wheel. Is this an indication that the rear wheel bearings are worn and need to be replaced, or should I just keep tightening the locknut to achieve the proper bearing preload (this would require tightening the locknut more than 43 ft-lbs). Any help is greatly appriceated.

Hmmm. Something doesn't seem right to me. The procedure is to snug up the hub nice and tight (43 ft/lbs) to squeeze the grease and to seat the bearings. I would keep doing this until the hub tightens more than the 12.4 lbs, then back off and set the preload per the specs, then secure the lock nut with the 2 screws.

IIRC when I did mine I had to torque to 43 lbft then spin the hub which would loosen everything like Beowulf said. After doing this a few times (basically repeat the initial procedure a couple of times) I wound up at 11 lbs. Hope it helps and good luck.

Is this the inner nut you're tightening to 43 ftlbs, or the outer (lock nut)? The inner, by itself, should be tightened to 43, at which point you should have difficulty moving the hub at all. If that's not happening, I'd take the bearings back off and see what's going on- you may have something wrong that's allowing the adjusting nut to bottom out somehow.

He is doing the rear Spike, there is only the 1 hub nut that is locked with 2 screws instead of an outer lock nut like the front.

(Pics from beno's rear axle service thread in the FAQ)

When you are doing the rear you torque to 43 (or whatever is in the FSM) then set preload by aligning that lock nut to the indents on the spindle, then lock down the nut with the 2 screws.

Agree with Spike's question. Also, your use of "to rotate the wheel" gives me the impression you are not using a string scale on the hub stud?

Wow, been awhile since I did the rear. You sure there's no inner/outer? I guess I vaguely remember something like you describe. In any case, I'd still guess something's bottoming out where it shouldn't. Maybe one of those locking screw-things?

Here is an image of the rear axle components. I could not find it in the FAQ or in Onur's rear axle service thread.

This may be the part that barCruiser is missing:

Using a spring tension gauge, check the preload and
tighten the nut until the preload is within the specification.
Preload (at starting):
26–57 N (2.6–5.8 kgf, 5.7–12.8 lbf)

After the 2nd torque to 43, you loosen to hand tight, then continue to tighten until your preload is within the above range. You don't leave it at 43 and you don't leave it hand tight.

HTH.

Fellas this is exactly the thing that I verified and re-verified in the following thread. You can see that it got a great many responses which is why it was so memorable methinks but anyway ...

http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-te...lock-nuts.html

I found this out by following the FSM precisely over and over and over and realized that to take that locknut to the proper position yer gonna get anywhere from 43 to 48 ftlbs of torque! I suspect everyone with the right rear preload could put one of those old fashioned torque twist things on the nut and measure 43 to 48 ftlbs before it busts loose.

Thanks turbocruiser, that post pretty much answered my question. I'm going to work on it tonight, and will probably just use more torque on the preload, and see where that gets me. Can't wait to patch this up and try out my new 4.88's.
