Radiator for FZJ80?

Radiator for FZJ80?

traveling to a very hot climate and I want to know if the oem fan will be ok? or would it be better to install electric fans to cool the radiator down when driving slowly?

I will be driving slowly over rough back roads in very hot temps

any help would be appreciated

Maybe the best answer to this question would be to see what Toyota provides on the vehicles sold in that environment. ?

Christo might also have some great insight.....

Go with OEM radiator (brass or aluminum, much debate on that), blue hub clutch fan, and if you REALLY want some serious cooling then the JDM electric aux fan.

There are threads detailing everything that can be easily found in both the FAQ and via searching.

Also, don't forget to swap out the oil in the blue hub fan clutch for some 10,000 weight oil. Huge difference.

It may not be necessary for him, we get the wimpy stuff, the rest of the world gets the good stuff. The original & replacement clutches in Africa probably come with thicker fluid allready installed.

In my experience, as long as the stock system is in good condition, clean, good fan drive, etc, it's good to go. It's pretty common for the temp to be 115F/46C here, with the 10K fluid in the clutch I have zero issue. One day last summer I played in the rocks, power braking, pretty much zero mph, A/C on, the high was 116F with no issues.

In a attempt to finely finish my base lining. I recently did the blue fan clutch mod,(two tubes 6000) the JDM condenser fan, all hoses and a complete cooling system flush inc. rear heater and of course Toyota RED.

Now on 100+ plus days like today coming back from the beach in stop n go traffic. Myself and the family were comfy as can be. The biggest difference to me was the JDM condenser fan. Before I did that, if I wasn't moving the A/C would not stay cold. Now It doesn't go over 45 degrees out the center vent.

You should be fine if you just stick with what you can find in the FAC and OEM parts available. BTW, I am still running my original radiator

Hmm,.. I was driving stock (well,.. except for the armor) LCs in 140+ degree temps with no overheating for several years... Africa,.. and the ones I drove in the summers in Thailand/Laos/Myanmar never had an issue either... neither did all the LCs I ran into used by Nato,.. "Dr's without Borders" and all the other Agencies and NGO's I've worked with.

The trucks come with sufficient cooling as is.

Regards,
Bill

Those all had the exact same cooling equipment we get?

Actually, it's quite likely they did come with the exact cooling system. The US is considered a harsh environment for both hot and cold weather. The difference is that in the rest of the world, people take care of their vehicles FAR better then Americans do. Meaning regular antifreeze changes, proper flushes, and all the rest. In fact, in some countries their respective inspections for vehicle registration are so strict that poor maintenance is a cause for denial.

So, a lot of the 80s we see on here having cooling issues are vehicles that were poorly maintained at some stage in their life and now they have 150,000 on them and need major maintenance.

Mostly agree, except for the fact that we get 3,000 weight oil in the fan clutch and they get 10,000 weight. I'd assume this is done for the slight fuel economy advantage, however slight it is.

Lighter oil here....less heavy part there (IE: aluminum vs brass radiator)....it all adds up and pretty soon you're talking about a 10% increase.

Of course a 10% increase for many of us means ~1 MPG.

Pretty much,.. they were all purchased from Toyota USA and then up-armored in Springfield VA. Only ones that weren't (obviously) US spec were the 105s we armored up (Also in Virginia then shipped out). We got those from Gibraltar imports.

Later!
