Lockers not locking...

I know there has to be a previous thread on this. Been searching for a while and have not found it. If some one can point me to the right discussion I would appreciate or give me the quick and dirty on the troubleshooting. Guessing it's mainly involved with the actuators. Got the rig from a lady that had no clue what the diff lock was and in her 10 years of ownership probably never once engaged it.

All electrical seems to work, getting positive indications in the cluster and harness look sound entering the actuator.

By the way pulled it of her for 3500 for a 96, bout a 170,000 miles. needs some work here and there but nothing to terribly bad. Still giddy like a school girl over the transaction.

Thanks
Dave

A lot of times if you simply lock them at the switch and slowly swerve left to right while driving they will lock up. It is harder to get them loose if you are simply driving straight ahead. HTH.

Tried engaging and turning while driving; no results. I vaguely remember reading a post about pulling the actuator and exercising some component behind the actuator housing if it hasn't been used and is sticking. Am I completely out to lunch with this memory, or is there some truth to it?

Thanks,
Dave

welcome

I had a similar situation last month with my new score, I tested the dash lamp circuit for the center lock by jumping the plug at the T case; after it lit with the jumper, I had no problem getting the center to lock when dropping into Lo, and then the dial for the front and back locks was unplugged at the dash; plugged that in and presto, locked '80

I guess that my PO, (and yours possibly) unplugged the dial so there would not be any chance of locking the axles in by mistake while commuting to the office......in low range?
Or something like that.
When you get a bunch of reply's to SEARCH THE FORUMS!! take it with a grain (or box) of salt, the answers are here for finding, and the search function in the upper right hand corner will get you most, also go to the FAQ list at the top, look for SLEE's FAQ list, and their website,

congrats on the score, good one

also, do the CDL button and 7 pin mod, lets you lock all 3 in high range, and gives you the option to stay unlocked in Lo range, more power to ya'

My PO had unplugged the main connection under the PS panel. Plugged it back in and they locked perfect. Apparently, they had NEVER been used.

Good luck.

Dave,
What are you using for keywords on the searching?

I put in Keywords=diff lock testing (Adv Search, 80-Section, "posts")
and came up with precisely the threads that you are looking for and one of those threads (on the 1st page no less) point to this prior post:

Ok I am going to piggy back on that thread.
So here is my situation.
I have 1994 80 with C/F/R lockers
My center and rear lockers work no problem but I get no action from the front and no amount of driving in the circles, on gravel is helping.

Any quick check idea that may help out.... before I tear down that sucker

RedTacoma,
Start with basic voltage checks at the actuator then go from there.
