Fan Clutch Removal with SC
I have had my Blue Fan clutch 2.5 years and feel its time to swap the fluid. Today it was 101 deg and going up the mtn pass fully loaded with AC and aux fan on, climbed the temp a little higher than I liked (~215). Course near the top traffic slowed to a crawl which cuts the airflow. Soon as I crested the hill and started moving the temp dropped down below 190 fairly quickly (AC off)
Read lots of thread and I see the two bolts on the shroud, np. 4 bolts on the fan clutch, I will get them off. Threads say to work the fan and clutch out through the passenger side. Looking at Sarah's stock truck that looks simple enough. Me with dual batts and the SC looks a little more challenging, especially with the TRD fan that comes with the SC. Before I start yanking the second tray I thought I would see if that was required, or more was needed based on those with Superchargers. Looks pretty simple on a stock truck. |

I've been experimenting with different clutch/silicone combinations lately and have become a master at changing them out. Unfortunately, I too have dual batteries (no S/C) and have not found a way to remove the fan and clutch without removing the batteries and trays. Not a big deal really, just an extra ten minutes.

I have dual battery trays (no SC) and I was able to get the stock fan out and in without removing the second tray or the shroud. Just use a little bit of well placed force to flex a couple of the fan blades enough to pop it out. Eat your Wheaties!

The fan blade that comes with the SC is larger and your method won't work. There is an outerband like a circle and it fills the entire shroud cavity

Hmm, cdan hasn't told me about that one and the bastids on vacation so I can't yell at him. Think I will delay the fluid changeout till I know more about this.
Thanks Shawn |

Somewhere in there the Shaman tried to help the lad with some advice about the old fan from 4Runners ( I hope I remember this right ) as having a lot more stiffness and strength. I'll try to find the thread too. ![]() Edit: Here you go Ken! http://forum.ih8mud.com/953879-post6.html __________________ 97 FZJ80, Locked & Loaded, Safari Turbo, Safari Intercooler, LandTank MAF, 3" Ceramic Coated Custom Exhaust, Ron Davis Racing Radiator, OME HD 2.5" Suspension, DBA Slotted Rotors, New Toyota Calipers All Around, Toyota Pads, 33" Revos, ARB Front Bumper, Center Diff Switch, Slee Stuff: Roof Rack, Step Sliders, Skid Plates, SS Brake Lines, DC Drive Shaft. I recently installed the cdan-fan and a new blue clutch. HUGE difference versus the stock clutch and the ringed s/c fan.
The ringed fan barely kisses the bottom of the shroud and I did the cdan-mod to the lower shroud to ensure the new fan has plenty of clearance. The reason for the clearance issue is that the spacer that is needed to move the fan assembly away from the engine to allow for the s/c belt to fit moves the fan into near interference with the shroud. I hadn't heard the 'roar' of the fan for a long time - obviously my stock/original clutch was toast. With the new blue clutch (haven't fiddled with the oil at this point) I easily hear the startup roar. After the install we had some 100F+ days and with engine hot I could sit at idle in the sun for 10+ minutes with the A/C blowing cool and happy. So, definitely worth checking the condition of the existing fan related stuff since it just deteriorates slowly versus sudden death. Yes, you will need to pull the trays to get the shroud off to get the fan off... cheers, george. __________________ where ever you go, there you are.... Why does Dan recommend the blade on the left vs the the one that comes with the SC kit on the right?
What was the other mod George mentioned to the shroud? |

Ken, x2 on what George is talking about, I replaced my ringed fan with the 3VZ one - big difference. I had to remove the shroud to get the assembly out, but had to take it out anyway to cut it to clear the new fan blades.
My 100 has never topped 190*, even the BOTH front and rear AC's on high and going up a mountain pass. Towing.

Robbie told me a trick. Cut the shroud near the top nice and clean in the middle and then you can easily get the fan out. Make a little metal bracket to reconnect the parts of the shroud and then you can easily take the fan out when you need to.

The ring fan is the original 3.slo fan, it had a few issues, most notably the tendency to come apart violently. It was replaced by the nonring that Dan is running. With the drama that the exploding ring fans caused on the 3.slo's I'm surprised TRD put them in the super kits!
