Need Birf evaluation ( pics ) trashed or not?

These are from the short side , when cleaning this side seemed harder to turn.
So I decided to open it up , It looks pretty worn the edges of the cage are pretty sharp, there are nicks in the balls and ridges on the bering surfaces.

1. what do you think , keep em or get new ?

2. Can I just install new balls , races and cage?

There is also a bit of wear on the shafts from the seal wear.

Thanks,

ken

Do they click enough to annoy you? if no, I'd run them as is. Maybe start looking for spares from low mile trucks.

Thats the funny thing, I never heard any clicking sound.

( Background )... I purchased the truck @ about 111,000 mi and the knuckle grease
was on the low side , I have been filling the knuckle ever since.
Everything was full of grease when I pulled it.

When I did my birf job ar 140K they looked maybe a bit less worn than yours. I did not hear any clicking, so I just swaped sides and called it good since I won't be seeing any hard core wheeling before the next birf job. My ball bearings did not have any nic's or wear that I could see. The assembled shafts seemed to rotate and function correctly too.

I also had wear on the axle shaft near the seal. However I am not convinced that it was from having "bad" inner axle seals. If anything I would imagine that a worn seal would have less contact and thus inhibit the shaft from wear.

Can anyone back me up on this?

I suspect that the axle shaft wear is from worn/shady spindles/bushings. My spindles didn't look like they were in the best of condition, but they looked like they should hold up for another 50K hopefully. I will be replacing both spindles with the new needle bearing style spindle from CDan and marlin inner seals next time.

I would probably venture to say swap the birfs to the opposite sides and go for it unless you do serious rock crawling.

Well Im kinda thinking ditching these.
It would be nice if there was a clear cut requirement for wear , I dont have enough experence with these but it seems in the world of berings these would be fubared.
I still havent seen or read if you could replace just the guts ( balls, cage, race ).

If there are any more opinions out there I would love to hear them..
Thanks,
ken

I agree with Cruiserdrew. Run them if they are not clicking. If you are buying new ones (quite spendy) then save that as a trail spare or sell it to me 'cause I need another spare (long horrid story)

You cannot buy just the guts... at least not new from Toyota.

(apolgies for slight threadjack)
If one has a moderate/bad click (only on full lock acceleration from standstill), is it worth replacing the offending joint, or is swapping sides likely to give another 50K and alleviate the noise ?

60 birf work in an 80

I know this is a shot in the dark...but does anyone know if you could swap 60 birfs into an 80 axle? I'll know first-hand soon enough (I've got two 60 axle assemblies in the garage that need to go!) so I'll have two sets of Birfs when I pull the thirds.

Yes, you can swap 60 birfs into and 80 axle but they won't fit very well.

The 80 birfields are significantly larger and more HD than prior versions, including the FJ62 and FJ60.
