Fan clutch fluid

So how much fluid is needed to refill the blue hub fan clutch if completely drained? Been reading threads for a half hour and can't find it.

Not much. IIRC mine was about 6 oz?
Maybe Tools R Us can say for sure, as he did mine

I seem to remember that with an overnight drain still leaving some fluid/film in the clutch it takes exactly two tubes to correctly fill the clutch. I'm referring to the tubes that the dealers sell here, btw. I bought two tubes of the 6K from Dan based on the Landtank thread. My clutch is relatively new so IF i think that the fill is a little low, I'll just take some of the old drain 3K (US spec IIRC) and add as appropriate. All of this is from my memory and my memory sucks so perhaps either Landtank or Tools can chime in here to help.

I have found there is no consistency with volume amounts on an oe clutch. I would drain the clutch over night as others have said, but when you fill it, fill it to the top of the reservoir opening.

The newer style Aisin blue hubs, (identified by sheet metal spring holder) my fill is 50ml. The earlier type (cast spring holder) can hold more ~60ml. The original Eaton clutches about only hold ~30ml.

The first pic is the newer style Aisin with sheet metal spring holder, the second pic the older Aisin blue or black hub style.

Wow, that surprises me, I'm not saying it isn't so, I'm just saying it surprises me. Is this with clutches that aren't leaking any or otherwise have a reason to be so drastically different? Between the really wide range of observed temperatures where the clutches activate and this inconsistency in fluid fills, we really seem to have missed the mark in standardizing this incredibly important part. Either way, if you drain overnight and add two tubes regardless of how "off" each one was with others to start with, yer gonna get the same final fill.

Edit: Looks like the tubes I got from Dan of the 6K (part no. 08816-06001 ) are 15ml's each so three tubes is more appropriate unless you simply take some of the old 3K and add it. HTH>

IIRC, the last blue hub I did took a little over 50ml.

I picked up 50 ml of the 10,000 weight rc diff fluid at the hobby shop. I'll put all of it in after I drain for a few hours. I have a newer style blue hub. I had no cold air at all idle, but at 30 mph or more I have cold air. At idle, the clutch was not engaging. I'm hoping this will do the trick to having some AC in this 100 degree weather. Anti-freeze flushed as well and no overheating either.

Which side of the clutch is the 'reservoir' on? Looks like both sides hold fluid?

Just dumped the 50ml of fluid in and got it put back together and installed. Nice roar on startup and can tell the roar during idle at stops, traffic, etc. Only thing is this didn't get my AC cool, I look again and now the compressor clutch doesn't engage. FSM says check belt tightness, than check the magnetic clutch relay. I'll try and figure out how to 'test' the relay, if I can find it.

Don't overlook the belts. There is a reason that the FSM says to check them first. Depending on age it might be a good idea to replace the A/C belt. My A/C wasn't working right after I bought the truck in 2001. No audible indication that the belt was bad or slipping. Put on a new belt and tightened and the A/C has worked fine for 7 years.

My pully had fallen off the adjustment bolt near the bottom of the engine. Check to make sure its tight and the pully is still there

Belt is new and tight(OEM) and everything is intact. I need to figure out why the clutch isn't engaging. I remember before I would hear a slight click when it engaged and RPM's would jump to around 800-850. Now I get no engagement at all.
