Power steering pump trouble

hello
i recently brought a 96 80 series DX landcruiser for $8500 AUD with 222000 km on the clock. . . the body is a little rough but mechanically i thought was good . . . i drove it home and the power steering started to leak so i sourced a power steering seal kit and and removed the pump, pull it apart and put the seal kit and reinstalled the pump to the car . .. i did not however fill the pump with oil from the top hose after i mounted it as bleeding the system did not cross my mind as a hard . . . .. i have tryed to bleed it as described here

Have a friend watch and once you get to the point where there are no air bubbles coming up in the reservoir and the fluid level remains constant, you can be pretty sure you've bled it properly. It should be OK to drop it and start the engine now. Turn the wheel lock to lock a couple times and listen for moaning.

And i bleed the system as descirbed in the Gregorys Manual i got with the car and nothing has seem to work
Do the think i have reassemalbed the pump wrong or is the system hard the bleed ????
The steering is still really heavy like it is unassisted
Has anyone had this same problem or anyone got any suggests on what i should do next ???

On the up side the pump is no longing leaking

thanks

Power steering pump overhaul

Hi Josh,

Here's a link from the South African LC club that's very detailed.

I'm sure it will help.

All the best,
Bushpig.

I didn't know that. What a shame.

What engine do you have? If it is the 1fz-fe that we get in the states, check your crank bolt. When I rebuilt and bled my PS system, then still had no PS assist, it turned out that my crank bolt was loose.

On front end of the 1fz-fe crankshaft, there is the gear for the timing chain, the gear which drives the oil pump, and the accessory pulley. The timing chain gear and the pulley are keyed to the crankshaft, while the oil pump gear is held in place by the clamping force provided by the crank bolt. The PS pump runs off of the oil pump gear, so if your crank bolt is loose, the oil pump gear on the crankshaft can slip, lowering your oil pressure and your PS boost.

The 1fz-fe crank bolt torque spec is 309ftlbs.
