need input on getting my 91 fj80 running

just purchased this 91 fj80. It was not running but prev owner said it ran when parked. Its been sitting about 3 yrs give or take.
the first thing I noticed was the fuel gage wasnt working. After some trouble shooting, I also decided the fuel pump wasnt working. I popped out the pump and it was a mess so I replaced it and the fuel filter for good measure. Shot some wd40 the the fuel gage float and now it works also.

Now, the rig will start but will not run. It might run for 10 sec. then shuts down. any input on what i should be checking?

Any cruiserhead mechanics n the Lexington, ky area with free time to help would kindly be paid by the ounce!

THX

On a 91, diagnostic puter = paperclip.

Possibly the AFM (air flow meter). The fuel pump relay (circuit opening relay) has 2 coils. One for "cranking", fired by the starter circuit, and one for "run", fired by the switch in the AFM. If the AFM switch got "sticky" due to sitting for a year or 3...you get the idea.

The AFM is the metal box between the 2 halves of the intake plenum. ALSO...make sure the intake plenum is not torn downstream of the AFM. This is VERY common and will cause similar symptoms. In fact the more I think of it the more I like this idea. Look for tears in the underside of the plenum. Unmetered air will cause all sorts of woe and strife, almost always at idle.

How much fuel was left in the tank for the 3 years? Did you dump it or are you burning old varnish?

i dont know how much was in there but my guess is just a few gallons. since the gage wasnt working, i didnt know how much was in it and filled the tank with fresh gas. i didnt drain the old but though it would mix up well enough to run this first tank out

Spent some time today downloading the FSM from the toyota site, thanks jonheld!

it gave me two codes, both were concerning the Air flow meter. I have not done the prescribed troubleshooting past the codes but think i will replace the AFM and see if that doesnt fix the problem.

Have you given the AFM a few diagnostic whacks with the butt of a screwdriver?

Try unplugging the AFM.

Jon and I and a few others batted this around a while back: Some of us found that our rigs *would* run with it unplugged, while others (mostly Jon, I believe) found it wouldn't.

Regardless, it'll take it out of the loop, and you might get lucky.

I always like getting lucky!

I took the whole assembly off tonight and ran thru the ohm meter diagnostic from the fsm and believe the afm to be in good shape. then i found the problem which was a crack past the afm sucking in air. a little duct tape was enough for trial purposes and what do you know.....she fired right up!
thanks jonheld, i owe you one you had it right from the beginning.

so should I try replacing the plenum ala factory or is there an aftermarket source that would be just as good? it was on the piece closest to the throttle body

Best bet is to call CDan and have him send you a new one.
BUT..... you can clean it up and seal it with some RTV. (I did this to mine about a year ago, you know, just until I could get the new part ordered....... its still working great

Just to be clear. It is NOT supposed to be able to run with the AFM unplugged. The fact that it does run on some trucks points to a problem. The AFM provides the ground path for the fuel pump relay after you stop cranking the starter. When the motor is not running and you're not cranking the starter, the fuel pump should be off. If it's still pumping then imagine what could happen in the event of an accident.

Just throwing it out there...

Good on you!
I would replace both pieces with OEM. They are old and brittle and will most likely develop more cracks over time.

So can we agree that Jon should be moved over to the "3FE Expert" category? I tried moving him last week and there was an outcry of protests in that thread and via PM.
