front bumper build...

My front bumper. sorry about the quality of the photos. I'll try to take some better daylight photos when I get a chance. plz keep in mind that I did this with a harbor freight pipe bender, and I also fodn out how much easier things would have been if I had an extra hand. I think I still have alot more bending to go before I can call myself a master of HF tools.

since i moved here to Texas, i haven't found very many places to play in the rocks, so I went with a pre-runner style bumper that was still capable of playing in the rocks when I venture back home to Colorado. Still have alot to do. when I get rock sliders put on, I'll have add fender protection and a rear bumper. those to come shortly.

Not bad.

Any pics of how it's mounted or the back (inside) of it? Just curious how it's internally framed out.

Any particular reason you decided to bring the tubing out that far?

i'll try to get some of how its mounted tonight and of the internal framing. I brought it out a little too far for my liking, but it will also keep deer farther away from the grille driving late at night in southern Texas.

I have a feeling its a result of the HF pipe bender. But could be wrong

No, you're right. Been there, done that. People will argue, and are correct when they talk, about the structural integrity being compromised on a bend like that. My counter to them is, you throw a 7K lb vehicle at your bend and I'll throw one at my bend and we'll discuss the results, you first.

Looks good IMHO!

umm, your cruiser kicks ass! Love the whole look of the the beast!
I spend more time in the 60 section so please excuse a couple questions that may be easily found via searching but, what size lift is that? how did you get those lights in the grill? got any close up pics? and where did you get the bling headlights? I know this a 4x4 web site but those head lights look sweet on your rig. The black paint works well for the looks of it too by the way.
I definately want to get a set of lights like that sometime.
Thanks.

Were you using the correct sized dies? If so, was the pipe just popping out of it (hence the reason for the other set of hands)?

Looks good! I feel your pipe-bending pain! I'm trying to build a roll cage for the 40 and wish I had a few more competent hands.

try filling the pipe with sand before you bend it, that will keep it from kinking

The issue is using a pipe bender on tubing. And not using a tubing bender, its been discussed alot on multiple forums.

The kinks only seem to affect the top of the bar. The bottom of the bars where they mount to the bumper seem to be pretty solid. Nice work!

Thanks, but the other issue is that a pipe bender is <$200, while a good tubing bender is >$1,000. For a tool I don't use very often, I prefer the pipe bender, which if used on smaller diameter tubing and not used in tight bends works quite well with the proper dies and an extra set of hands or two.

I only work for rich people, although I am aspiring...

I built this with a harbor freight bender and had no issues I never kinked a tube, it just left little dimples where the rollers were. This was my previous Toyota, a 91 reg cab pickup, I hated to see her go but A family meant I needed a cruiser!

My HF bender does a decent job. I just bent 2" X .188" DOM for my sliders. Way harder to bend than .120 wall! I used a blue wrench while it was bending to keep it from kinking.
