Slow pulling away from a stop
I know these aren't hot rods, but lately my Cruiser feels very sluggish pulling away from a dead stop in town. I don't drive it as much as my wife does, so it might just be my perception, but it seems like I really have to lay on the pedal to get going. I don't hear any tranny noises, or slipping, it doesn't clunk in to gear or have a problem shifting...I don't think. Any ideas?

is there any play in the e-brake handle? It's not uncommon for the bellcranks to seize in the on position.

Wouldn't you smell a burning brake smell from the rear end if the bellcranks were seized? My Ebrake has some play and I need to adjust mine, but I haven't smelled any burning brakes yet if that is a sign of a seized bellcrank.

I had no idea what was going on, and my 80 also has the same problem that MDarius is having when he starts going! I'd like to check if the E-BRake is the cause of the problem, some advice how to do it would be more than welcome! __________________ Toyota Rocks!!! ![]() Exercising my Second Amendment Right Every Single Day!!!!

It's easy enough to check.
First release the hand brake completely in the cab, Next, crawl under the truck and look at the rear of the backing plate. Notice where the cable attaches to the bellcrank and there is a threaded rod with a rubber end on it. With the hand brake released the rubber stop should be touching the backing plate on both sides of the axle. If there is any space between the rubber stops and the backing plate something is not right. If it's a lot of space and the cable has slack in it then the bellcranks are likely seized and the e-brake is engaged all the time. Initial solution is to take a hammer and beat the crank back so the stops are touching and then rebuild. __________________ Rick Bigelow '96 215k Groveland MA 01834 If you're not the lead dog, the view never changes |

2nd gear start: No.
Ebrake play: Nope. Hot tranny: mmm....possible. Not from use necessarily, but it's been 100 degrees plus outside. Maybe just the difference between having the AC on and AC off. Kick down cable: good thought. I haven't checked, but will. Shifting is smooth and seems to do it at the right shift points though, so I don't think so. I've been driving with the "Power" button on this weekend and it seems normal, not sluggish. I'll double check these option before heading to Southern Utah in the morning, but I'm beginning to wonder if it's not just the AC + my perception. __________________ "That was the best trip EVER!" - most commonly heard phrase from the back seat since getting the 80 -White 95 FZJ80 | Specs: CDL, OME 2.5'' Med lift, Bridgestone Revos 265/75R16 -Green '94 | Locked and stock...Sold! -Discovering the West one trail at a time.
