The business of pulling out

Hey guys sorry for the very dirty sounding title on this one, but I was thinking of starting an around my campus pulling people out of the snow and ditches when they get stuck business. I have a 92 fj80 and was wondering first of all if this truck would have the necessary power, traction, etc... Also I was wondering besides the tow straps to get people unstuck what other equipment should I look into getting, possibly a winch, bigger tires, lift? Thanks so much once again guys you always are supremely helpful!

good ol common sense helps a lot when getting someone unstuck. Just use your head. but yeah the stuff you mentioned wont hurt at all.

Lift and bigger tires will not help you pull anyone out. The best purchase you could make would be a winch with a long line. Pulling someone out with a winch is a LOT safer on your vehicle than using dynamic pulls.

Make sure you bring two tow straps... Last time I pulled someone out, I broke my first one.

The guy was REALLY stuck. <cough>Jeep<cough>

Winter tires. You're not going to get around well in the snow, or be able to generate traction with a tow strap without them. Not mud tires, not aggressive looking tires featured in Petersons - winter tires.

Oh, and check local regulations so you don't find out AFTER you've spent money that you cannot be insured and cannot just start a business like this in your area. Especially on campus. Near 100% certainty you will not be allowed to do this.

Yep.

I'm having a total deja vu on this thread; pretty sure we went through the exact same scenario a couple years ago.

The lift obviously wont generate any more traction but it does create clearance for larger tires and usually if you go taller you go wider which would improve traction.

I did my undergrad in utah and had a lot of fun pushing people out. in the campus parking lot they would say "hey im stck can you help me out" Id say "sure I'll give you a push."

you need a little running start before you hit the back of their car. a lot of cars in Provo have my winch imprinted on their trunks. newer cars dont push as well as they are more designed to absorb the pushing forces. good luck with this technique. don't stay around long after to accept thanks

And how does bigger tires help pull someone out?

You want to stay with smaller tires to put more power to the ground.

Your probably only gonna pull cars about 5- 10 feet from where they are correct? You could use a chain too. Where are you located?
Also, I'm pretty sure you don't want to pull from the front end. Pull from back end only.

Make sure that it's spelled Waiver on that slip of paper they signed. You don't want Judge Judy to award your FJ80 to them.

The first year I owned my 77 FJ55 (78), I pulled the valance off a 62 Malibu Wagon mired on the beach of the CoE lake I was working at as a Park Technician. I let the kid hook my chain onto his Dad's vehicle, & I didn't charge him for the damages. Had I been a Ranger, I could have let him go with a Citation (no, not the GM X-car).

Once you've thought this through & consulted your Attorney (that's the guy who points out to the Judge your slip of paper reads Waiver); calculated your tug fee to cover the cost of gas (knew a Ranger who used his FJ55 to pull a F250 buried to the axles in mud = 4 hrs & 1/2 tank of gas); got additional Insurance coverage before your Agent told you you're NOT COVERED as a commercial account (you did charge didn't you?); I would suggest only one more thing:

Fill the back end with sacks of Kitty Litter.
  1. Assess stuck victim.
  2. Assess stuck vehicle: FWD or RWD?
  3. Collect fee 1st. Make up story, like sorry but I pulled 3 little ole Ladies yesterday & they'd all lost their $$ at Legion Bingo; etc.
  4. THEN, AND ONLY THEN,
  5. Get out a bag of Kitty Litter & spread it out in front & back of their driving wheels; take the key to the stuck vehicle; put it in Lo; drive it out.
  6. You collected beforehand; because, NOBODY likes to pay to be proven they could have gotten themselves out of a fix afer the fact.

Winch + Snatch Block + Tree Saver + Tow Straps + D-rings.

Also, get Synthetic Cable for your winch....no need in risking it with people who are clueless.

Best,
Max

Last winter, after skiing, I would just drive around the Alpine Meadows parking lot looking for stuck people. Its amazing how many Bay Aryans have no idea how to drive in the snow. I never charged them anything though...

I am curious how much you will charge so I know what to charge you if I run across you stuck on a trail. Way to capitalize on others misfortune.

just try to avoid pulling people out in reverse unless you have to, your truck should move forward when pulling a load or you can damage your drivetrain/axles etc... or just park it (Using the e-brake) and use a winch, cruisers got the weight

It adds a lot of unnecessary stress on your birfs as well. That's why I only recover "friends".

I will never charge anyone to pull them out. It's a simple (sometimes) and kind service, not a business. I even pulled out a Jeep for free. A JEEP.

Sheesh.
