your the next contestant on ... "Name That Sound"

have a 93 FZJ80 with lockers and OME's and have been driving around recently and have noticed a metal on metal sound coming the the DS wheel well. Toyota dealer said it was just the mudders making that sound, but its def. not. Only hear it at slow speed when coasting. If on the gas, don't hear the sound. Typically hear it coming to a stop on a bumpy road (brick pavers) with my foot off the gas and breaking lightly (usually hear it when braking/coasting) My thought was front drift shaft? Wheel bearing? I don't know fellas, need some help! Is this a SERIOUS problem, or can I drive around to awhile until I cam fix it (I am doing a 2K drive from FL to CO in less than a month) Thanks.

If you have a CDL switch, remove the front drive shaft and engage the CDL (ways to do itmanually) see what effects this has.

How are your Pads?

Have you checked your Diff Fluid level?

Have you lubed the zircs in your U joints?

Take the little plug off the top of the knuckle near trhe ABS sensor and stick something down the hole to see if their is grease and if it is soupy.

Brake pad would be my guess. Does it only click once when you touch the brake? If it clicks more than once then it's not the brake pad.

Don't have a CDL switch, (at least I dont think, its a stock cruiser) just the 4lo/4hi and lockers. Had Toyota check everything, but a very good chance they missed something. Said they lubed everything that needed it, but not quite sure if they really did. So you don't think its the drive shaft? What else would be making that noise. I don't think its the brakes, just sounds to loud to be coming from that. Sounds like the driveshaft has some play in it, and bounces or clanks when on a bumpy road slowing down. Is this normal?

When was the front driveshaft last lubed (if not recently... lube it up). Also, I'd check the wheel bearings by jacking up the front tires and give each of them a wiggle to make sure your bearings are snug (place hands at 12 and 6 on the tire and wiggle). Dosen't sound like a wheel bearing issue, but lots of times with noises all you can do is eliminate one thing at a time. It honestly sounds like your brakes are down to the wear indicator (i.e. little piece of metal that will rub on your rotors when your pads get too thin).

You can manually engage the CDL and pull the shaft. Don't have time to search now, but as I recall, you put it in 4WD Lo Lo and then pull the cable off the Tcase and put it back in High
