Cheapest OBD II scanner
Hi,
My wife's 80 has the CEL. Autozone no longer allows you to check out a OBDII scanner, so what do you all recommend as the cheapest/best scanner. Emphasis on cheapest, as my wife has the 80, and doesnt need all the cool real-time functions that scangague II has. Just something to read, and delete. I found this, looks good. Amazon.com: Actron CP9125 PocketScan Diagnostic Code Reader for OBDII (Post-1996) Vehicles: Automotive thanks __________________ "The trouble with America is when the dollar only earns 6% over here, it gets restless and goes overseas to get 100%. Harbor Freight has one for around $40. It does nothing but show you the code number. I keep one in my tool box so that if I do get a code, I can at least know if it's important or not while I'm away from home.

I am looking for one that can also delete the code, after reading it.

Question - say you have a cheap code reader that will not clear CEL, is there any downside to just disconnecting the battery to clear the code? Outside of the obvious eventual striped battery bolt and dirty hands, of course.

Some codes especially on OBD-II systems will not clear with the battery disconnected.

The cheap one from HF will clear the codes just fine. I've got one. Worked great until I bought my Scangauge. Well, it still works, I just don't use it anymore.
![]() In my opinion, if you are going to spend any more than $40 for the HF scanner, you may as well step up to the Scangauge. It is a fantastic tool for so many reasons.
