80s owners opinions

I just noticed that every time I talk to someone with a different car(land rover,ford,chevy,ect...) they always talk about a new car and problems they have, and how they want a new car, I dont know about yall but I love my Cruiser to death and wouldnt trade it for anything, after 135000 miles ive never had anything go wrong except an oil leak and new belts(typical for any car), I was just wondering if anyone else feels the same way

I love 80s so much that when my wife totaled ours, I promptly bought another!

An opinion? you're asking a bunch of alcoholics if they want a drink!

As part of the addiction, on a land cruiser, when your headgasket show signs of failure you actually get excited about an expensive and time consuming repair, because it resets the clock and you say: "Well that is taken care of for the next 200,000 miles."

I used to spend a lot of time looking for other trucks, then I bought a Land Cruiser.

All oldercars carry their own set of problems, some people can't hack it and want a new one. My 80 has been one problem after another but i'm not giving up on it as I think it is one of the best vehicles ever produce. There are K5, disco, rover, bronco owners that feel the same. Besides that i'm not going to pay 80k for a new cruiser and there really aren't that many new vehicles I like, for a fun factor. The only really competent new off-roader avail for a decent price is the JK and I don't see that may advantages owning a new 30k vehicle when my 16 year old one will perform just the same.

I had a 1989 4Runner that I bought used in 1994. In the 10 years I owned it I replaced the clutch, the AC compressor, the water pump, the starter, and several lesser parts. Then it left my wife and infant son stranded a couple of miles from home while I was 150 miles from home - wife walked home carrying the baby and was without wheels for a couple of days until I got it fixed.

After I got it fixed, I promptly sold it and bought a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer... Then I discovered ih8mud.com and learned the err of my ways. All the stuff that was likely to break on that 4Runner had already broken and been fixed by the time I sold it! So, I sold the "disposable" Trailblazer and bought my '92 FJ80 with my eyes open and 'mud as an EXTREMELY valuable reference for preventative maintenance etc.

I ain't lookin' back! I've fixed or "pre-fixed" everything likely to break, and I now know what "PM" is, so I'll have this 'Cruiser forever. (I don't have to worry about the head gasket, either!)

My name is "ashooter" and I'm a 'cruiserholic.

I think I have made the same post in several different threads...why not another!!

I've had a cruiser fetish for a long long time. It started with a buddies FJ40 back in high school. I couldn't afford a cruiser until I was in my late 20's because I wanted to pay it off. My thinking was that if it were paid off, the only cost would be insurance and gas. I lurked on this forum for so long that by the time I got mine it felt familiar.

I took it over to the good boys at "Urban Landcruiser" here in Atlanta, Ga. To have it evaluated (after I bought it.) They did 90% of everything and anything that needed to be done.

So that got me through phase 1 of the cruiser addiction; just owning one. I love owning one. It gets a lot of attention wherever I go. People frequently are caught looking in the windows and staring at the tires, they all say the same thing "I've always thought these looked tough..." to which I say "You don't even know the half of it."

I am happy knowing it is outside...I spend time under it, in it, on top of it whenever I can. I wash it and vacuum it and think that the tear in the drivers seat is a conversation pieces worth keeping. I drive it because it makes me happy, even though it is the slowest thing on the road. I pop curbs because I can and make my own turn lanes from time to time.

I am sometimes found in my driveway staring at it thinking of all the cool things I want to do once I have some coin. Visiting this site isn't that good for me because I tend to daydream even more...hahaha.

Driving a landcruiser for me is like owning an old home with lots of character. Lots of people want one, but few own them, and with the right kind of love they will last and last. With the resources on this website I know that I will be able to get help whenever I need it (and have needed it.)

This site + owning a landcruiser is the whole package. I've tried to find a comparable site for ANY of the other cars I owned and NOTHING comes close. This community is WONDERFUL! I use it so much that even my wife says "check the forums" when I think something is amiss.

There are all kinds of enthusiasts out there for all types of cars. No matter what they are driving...they still check out MY nearly stock 80 whenever they see me.

Unlike the phrase "It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand" this is a "Landcruiser thing, hop in and find out."

I end this with: Thank you everyone for making owning a Landcruiser one of my fondest joys. Without you guys it would only be a pretty cool car and not an absolutly fabulous passion.

I will take a different angle on this one. Dare I say the following? I’ve been considering a Lexus GX 470 after I test drove one in January. I was really chomping at the bit but I couldn’t pull the trigger. I enjoyed the extra power of the VVT-I engine but could not bring myself to go on a selling campaign for my 1997 collectors’ edition. I can’t keep both so 7 months later I’m still hanging on. Some of it has to do with having to come to terms with not be associated with the ih8mud family. I hate the fact there is no section here for GX 470’s. It has lineage to the cruiser (Prado) in other parts of the world.

In 1984 my wife (before we were married) bought an '82 long bed pickup for her landscape business until 1998. In the over 100K miles and all city driving, all it ever needed was regular maintenance.

In '05 when my Suburban blew an alternator in a remote place (this was after breaking a rear parts twice just regular on road driving), I told her that I needed something new. She didn't care which truck I bought as long as it was a Toyota.

Soon after I got the '05 Tundra I took a couple trips camping and exploring trails in the desert. I knew immediately that I wanted a Land Cruiser.

Now, we have 2 FZJ80's and we plan on driving them forever. There is no other car or truck I want.

I love wheeling my 80. As soon as I have enough cash to get a newer one the 80 will go hard core and become a trailer queen.

I am still amazed at how many other LC owners come up and talk to me about the mods I have done so far. Grocery store, gas station, mall. I think anyone who owns a LC really loves them.

Just yesterday I was driving down the street when a guy in a 60 series LC passes me. We both look at each other with giant grins give a thumbs up and go on our way. This whole exchange took 2 seconds at 50 mph, no words, just a mutual appreciation for each others rigs and the pride of owning a LC. I was unable to share this story with anyone because outside of mud not too many people would truly appreciate it.
So to answer your question I think that everyone that owns a LC feels the same way.

Viva la Cruiser!

^^^^^What he said. So many people go out and get Heeps and Bummers but there's no soul or class to them. The people that get Cruisers are people that know them and want them specifically. I'd never trade mine in even if gas goes to 10 bucks a gallon, I might drive it less but still at least once a week!

I'm currently on my first real road trip with my 97 to the Pagosa Springs, CO area. I'm sure all of the local Cruiser owners think I'm nuts because I'm waving to about every one Most have waved back, especially the guy in the built 40 series (the only 40 I've seen so far)

I love my Cruisers. There is absolutely nothing else I would have wanted out here in the Rockies (well. maybe a 100 series just for the V8). At first, she was a little hesitant on the steep grades and higher elevation, but now it seems to have adjusted to it (or I have). When I downshift now, it goes just fine. I'm just really glad that I changed the fan clutch before I went, or I would have had issues.......

KEEP WAVING...Many here probably think its annoying, but Im a waver when it comes to other 80s.

As for the new car thing, my wife has a 1.8T Jetta and the thing is plagued with so many small issues its unnerving. Spent this weekend spilling coolant while replacing the temp sensor for the second time. I have NO issues with my 80....so far. I tell my wife I'll never sell it, and I don't think I could ever bring myself to it if I tried.

I almost forgot what made me get a cruiser in the first place, a few years ago I took a couple tours in the desert of the UAE with some dune hopping fun mostly in 100 series but a few 80s. After seeing those things in action I knew I had to have one! I'll have to post some pics when I get a chance but the site of dozens of cruisers in the desert is awesome.

I didnt know much about them at the time but the 80s just felt so much more hard core than the 100s and after researching a build up of my 4runner and discovering all the great qualities of the 80 series it was time to upgrade.

I found an even better rig in my 97 so I have to sell the 96 though I'd love to keep both but back on topic, there are several 80s that i see regularly and I give them the wave as most of them exchange stares with me in that moment of unity while few just keep driving unaware of all the potential underneath them.

I also test drove a few other Toyotas (100 series, '07 4runner, etc) in my search for the perfect rig and the power was very suprising in the V8 4runner but in the end the 80 is where its at, slow as it may be.

(okay, end rambling)

Plain and simple - cruisers are an addiction. My first hit on the LC drug was my dad's 60 series when I was in college - 33s, and a lot of add-ons - easily the nicest in Vegas in the early 90s. The second was the '82 40 that I missed buying because it was in pieces, and the guy I had contracted could not find the time to get off the couch and rebuild it.

Do others feel it? Sure - ask an old Mustang guy, or a Mopar guy, or a Jeep guy. The only difference that I see is that we are the ones smart or stupid enough (POV) to take what started out as very expensive luxury vehicles and turn them in to trail beasts in some cases. Closest are the Rover crowd - Electrical problems aside - or the rare prince who will actually put Mud Terrains on his Mercedes G Wagon (still want one...)

My calls my visits to Mud forums Cruiser Porn - I tell her it is better for me to do this than the actual...

I agree, mine is part of the family and I laugh when people ask when I am going to sell it. I will never sell it, but I wish it had lockers. I would like to buy a few more clean ones because I know they are becoming more and more rare. I have never had a vehicle that is such a pleasure to drive. My cruiser is truly an addiction, and I wouldn't be able to support my addiction without all the awesome people here on mud.

When the world ends and there's no more gasoline, I'll hook my 80 to a team of draught horses.
I will be driven to my funeral in this rig.
You can have my Land Cruiser when you pry the keys out of my cold, dead hand.
$10/gallon? Bring it on. Just means there'll be less traffic.
If anyone is unsure of how I feel about my 80, ask. I'll make sure you get it.
