Personally the much reduced surface area of the spacers and the resultant higher stress on both the winch and bumper mounting surfaces would worry me.
Utilizing spacers that would present a similar surface area to that of the winch mounted directly to a winch plate similar to what the bottom picture represents would leave me much more comfortable when using the winch.

I have the exact same set up with same winch (xd9000i) with washers as spacers in my ARB. I have never had any issues and done some heavy winching.
