Thanks for the info. I'll be calling them tomorrow.

For anybody else in the Seattle region, their website is www.nix99.com

So? Are you going to do it? You can do it!! Just leave the hood off for awhile while you cut it and modify it.

Hey, either way you go (3F-E or 2F-E), talk with the boys at Delta Camshaft. They are local (Tacoma), high quality, and they know their stuff. A cam will wake the 3F-E up, you'll be glad you did it.

I haven't completely decided. As of today, I have the engine out and on a stand with the engine stripped down to a short block.

After lunch today, I'll start my evaluation of the block. I'll also have to get the cylinder bore professionally evaluated.

I'm not sure about cutting the hood. It would have to fit the valve cover as well as all the EFI box. This may require cutting the structural member running down the center of the hood.

Either way, I will check out Delta. Especially since they are only a 20 minute drive from my house.

Decisions.

Steve

I pulled the rod caps off and everything looks practically brand new. The rod thrust and oil clearance are all within factory specs. I didn't pull the main bearing caps yet.

I found a machine shop that will do an evaluation for $50 and give me options based on my budget.

So hopefully I'll get by with a rebore (or if I luck out a hone) and new internal components, a valve job and little shave of the head as well as a Delta cam shaft.

Yesterday, I dropped the 3FE short block off for a evaluation. It'll need a rebore for sure. Hopefully no machine work for the crank. I'll go with a delta cam.

The machine shop will check over the rest of the block and let me know late next week.

I wish I could go with the 2F block, however, because the reasons in prior posts it'll have to be the 3FE.

Maybe the thread should be changed to a "3FE rebuild" thread.

No, no!!! Go the 2F. If I had my old block I'd donate it to you! I really want to see a 2F-E in an 80.

BUT, I think you would be very happy with a rebuilt and cam'd 3F-E, though you may loose the more desirable torque curve of the more overstroked approach.

I would love to try it but the 3FE sits really close to the hood, in fact there is an indentation in the hood insulation for the air intake. I'm not even sure a 2 inch lift would even work. Also my ARB winch bar won't line up with the headlamps and who knows what else would have to be modified.

If I installed a scoop of some sort, based on the under hood insulation, it would have to be quite large (and tall) and it appears that it would affect the structural components of the hood. I'm not skilled in body work to make it work.

If anybody out there with a 3FE powered FJ80 cares to measure the distance between the engine and hood, I would like to hear it. My measurement was only an estimate because the engine was partially disassembled.
