What is this part for ?

My rear speakers have rotted away and I pulled the whole assembly out because it was rattling when I went off-roading. I have been looking at it for a few months and am trying to figure out what to do with it. The metal box has a board in it with a decent amount of electronics inside. It seems like alot of electronics just to drive the speaker. Can anyone tell me what the box does?
