Fuse Questions for Dual Batt System?
I wanted to ask you guys since I have a dual batt system and I am running to the second battery 4 ga from the switch and from the 2nd batt to the main blue sea fuse panel i am running an 8ga power wire and an 80 amp fuse in between. And then from the fuse panel to the (5) 12v outlets I am running 14 ga wire individually run to each outlet. My problem is that when I plug anything into the 12v outlets it automatically burns the fuse on the cord that i plug whether it be a cellphone car charger etc. In the fuse panel I am using 15amp fuses. I plug in a 12v adapter that makes (2) 12v outlets out off 1, and that works fineit douesnt burn the fuse. But it burned a fuse on my plug in inverter.
What is causing this to happen?? What is the recommended amp fuse for 12v outlets? The fuses are blowing because you have exceeded the amp rating of the fuse.
This has nothing to do with the wire size. This has nothing to do with the "outlet" (12v, chargers, or inverter) This is caused by a wiring problem. You are pulling excessive amps when anything is hooked up and that is likely caused by a short to ground. Test your wiring carefully because something is wrong. -B- __________________ 97 FZJ80 - Wing Nut MAF, locked, 315 Toyos, 4.88s, Slee 4", George's sliders, Slee bumpers, M12000, OBA, Outback drawers + other stuff. You do have the polarity correct to your 'outlets' - yes?
cheers, george. __________________ where ever you go, there you are.... '97 S/C White CE, locked^3, sliders, arb, kaymar, m12000,dual batteries, LEDs, etc..... ki6ibx http://www.george4wd.taskled.com |

Add another vote for a ground short somewhere - and I also think those wire sizes are far too small.
Do a search for Corbett's subpanel install for some clean work - nothing new, but his thread pulls it all together in one place (I think it is in the rising sun club forum). IIRC, he used 6g from the battery to the sub-panel and then 12g to the 12v outlets. I used 6g from the battery to the sub-panel and then 10g to the 12v outlets (all appropriately fused of course). I know others have used 4g from the battery to the sub-panel, but they located their sub-panel in the rear cargo area whereas I followed Corbett and many others and mounted it under the front PS seat so I didn't think the shorter run required the hassle of 4g. I did run 10g to the 12v outlets in the cargo area, but even on that slightly longer run the 'math' still worked out fine based on the on-line wire size/voltage calculators I used. Start by carefully checking all the wire for shorts - or just pull it all and start over with larger size wire. Of course, be sure to fuse everything properly and use proper grommets when passing through anything metal and/or sharp that could cut or abraid the wire. Good luck. __________________ 1996 FZJ80 (original owner) Black & Oak, 105k miles with factory F/R lockers, CDL switch, hand throttle, OME Springs & Shocks, ARB, Warn M12000, Milford Barrier, Dual Optima Blues, extended breathers, OEM dash cupholder, 285/75/16 BFG AT, Landtank seat rails, Slee AC dryer & T-case skid plates, Slee light & aux harnesses, Slee SS brake lines (frame->axle->caliper), V-1 with remote display, Icom IC-7000, Yaesu 8900R, Cobra 75wstx, Larsen NMO-2/70 & NMO-27, 100-series pads |

Well I am going to look for the short to ground errors... I will look for the errors with my wiring on the 12v outlets. I will double check double check everything.. and will post pictures... thanks for the advice..
Here is the link of the exact same setup that I had on my 80 which I took out and reinstalled in my prado. http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-te...made-rack.html __________________ Frank 1992 FJ80 Semi-Stock 2008 Prado VX - Semi-Stock 305/70/17 Maxxis Bighorn M/T w/ 1.5 trim spacers Safari Rack with Fogs HIDs Factory Digital Inclinometer/Compass Rear storage system Dual Battery Setup On Board Air Last edited by FloridaFJ80; 07-06-08 at 08:30 PM. |
