Front shock bushings

I'm new to all this coils n stuff, and after this weekends maiden voyage it was noticed that my front shock top side bushings blew up. They are both loose enough that I can grab the little thread protusion and wiggle things back and forth.
The truck (1990 hdj81) has a rancho lift (about 3" perhaps) with rancho 9000 shocks. What bushings/part number do I need to order?
And any thoughts on why this happened? Shocks too long?

In my experience this happens with bushings that are dry rotted and brittle. You may want to check the condition of the shocks before you get new bushings, which by the way are available at most auto parts stores as generic replacements.

hey there, i just replaced mine a couple of months ago. are both sides (top and bottom) of the shock loops, or is the top bushing going thru the bolt that i can see on the pic. if the are both the same, i got mine from lordco, energy suspension #306-9-8107G. they are 5/8 hourglass. hope this helps.

I can't say what happened, I have never worked on anything like it before, and have no idea what they are suppose to look like. All I can say is that I can peel off chunks of red plastic.
I assume you asked the parts drone for front shock bushings for a 1990(or 91,92) Landcruiser? Thanks for the numbers, I'll hit up a parts store tomorrow.

no, i asked what the look like, cause i think i have an adaptor to be able to use longer rancho shocks. if you do too, i'd like to guess they are the same numbers. you can post a pic or email me one and i could thell you if they are or not.

For the most part stem mount shocks use similar bushings, typically 5/8".

Explorer Pro Comp part # is 68221
Rancho is RANRS995

If you don't want the after-market urethane bushings you can use the OEM rubber bushings. They are softer. Be sure you torque the nut on top until the bushing starts to bulge. Do not over-tighten or they will bust apart like yours did.

I had the same problem, same shocks, changed to rubber bushings,, yesterday while jumping up and down on the front bumper I heard something loose, one of the fronts and the washer is completely inverted, so I took it loose gave it the hammer put back snugged up and will see how it goes, I think somethings up with the shock though as Im struggling to track down a weird noise. I wish they would just break so I can stick in some Billies

I have the same shocks on a 96. Tighten til they bulge. Go with energy or other top brand replacment bushings. The parts store ones will fall apart on you.

BUT mine does makes a wierd "boing" noise when I turn right over a slight depression. Is that the same strange noise that any of you hear?

I have heard many noises Im thinking were from these shocks but they are old and came with the truck, there was the boing sort of ,I have a diesel so evrything sounds a little different with the background drone. the noise im trying to find is difficult to describe like metal to metal but a tight not loose type of sound I dont care anymore I will be changing some time soon

Bushings fixed.....in my special Mickey Mouse kinda way. I was able to find some used rubber bushings in good shape from a club members shop, new ones were about a week away if ordered.
When I took the old ones apart, the bottom half of the bushings were "ok" (compared to the top half anyways), but the top half was pretty much worn down to nothing (see photo-the red urethane was the old top half).
There were 2 indented washers (keepers SOR calls them up as keepers I think), but nothing that I could see that would center the bushing/shock assembly on the oversize hole of the shock tower.
The exploded view on the SOR refers to a part I'm missing or was redundant with the rancho urethane bushings.
Anyways, I just sandwiched them together without a middle centering device. We shall see how that works out.

It won't work very well. You need the correct metal centering washers. Give Dan a call and order the washers and new shock bushings. That way you can fix it right and move on.
