front diff strength?
A recent oil change revealed I chipped a small tooth fragment off my front diff, probably while giving a huge Dodge Cummins a tug in reverse. I know this 8" reverse cut gearset is weaker going backwards, but it was the only way to free him, no space to turn around, my winch just pulled me closer and I had no trees to anchor off of. I have lockers, was not using them at the time, and I was still running 31x12.5x15 BFG ATs at the time.
Any comments in the way of front end strength on these suckers? I heard about a lot of these breaking. And before you say I'm just too hard on my shit, let me tell you, I am. This truck is a replacement for my old rock crawler, it's gonna have hard life yet. __________________ '85 4Runner SR5, 3B diesel, H42 tranny, dual cased, locked/welded, smurfed, rears/chebbies, winched, daily driven, rollin on go kart MTRs and way too much fun. -rolled, sold, getting new body '90 HDJ81 VX Ltd, lockers, rebuilt extreme stage 1 auto, M12000 on custom bumper, OME, Geolander MTs |

What do you base the 'small tooth fragment' off of? Did little pieces come out with the oil - some resembling a small child's fingernail? If so - situation normal. That's not a chipped tooth. If you have an actual corner of a pinion gear tooth or similar, then yes you have a problem but I'd give that a .00001% probability as generally when something lets go you have major damage. It's almost impossible to merely chip a tooth.

I would have been more about my birfs in that situation. You weren't turning also where you?

no, more like a child's finger. It was definitely a tooth, I've busted a few of these 8" gearsets running a big diesel in the rocks in my 4runner. What I wanted to know was, does this happen a lot, and where can I get replacement HP 8" 4.10 gears? Other than OEM, that is.Anyone on this board gone to the trouble of swapping a 9" croozer diff in an 80 front end (besides Slee with his Diamond housing on the 100)? Too bad they went to bigger birfs and knuckle hardware, but skimped on the diff...Cheers

Seems like there aughta be a few used stock gear sets on the market.
