was ist das?

While I was shpwing off my new 81 on this weekends clubs trip, someone pointed to this widget thingamagig hidden behind the front bumper. Its a short section of pipe, with a couple wires and factory looking type connections attached to it, with something inside the pipe. Any ideas?

We all figured it was the outside temp sensor as well. Mine does not have a gauge on the overhead cluster, just the compass and altimeter. My guess was it was just wired for it, but either removed, or never installed.
One joke was that is was a deer sensor as well

reread your first reply...automatic climate control?

You don't need a can like that for a thermocouple. I.e. WAY overkill for a temperature measuring bit.

It doesn't look...stock. Is there any residue inside the can? Is there any chance that it once held some sort of short range ordinance? Like a forward firing crowd clearing mini-mortar?

I keep looking for one of these trucks with hidden rocket launchers... You know... The James Bond limited edition. Plenty of room for them inside the front fenders.

The center "Auto" button on the JDM climate control, the outside temperature is used as an input for the control schema of the climate control.
