Hot Tranny in 94

Ok guys I got the tranny temp gauge installed in my rig last night and went for a drive today...maybe 75 degrees or so today...little stop and go on the freway.. some surface streets and the gauge reads over 225....get scared and park the truck... so if I am correct that seems too hot...also an assumption on my part is the cooler on the drivers side of the truck is tha tranny cooler??? and it was cold to the touch?? what the hell?? any help would be great...thanks

i'm in phoenix it's 113 out, nothing is cool to the touch...

... try a search, lots of info out there. one thing i've come
across is that if the torque converter's lockup is starting
to fail that can drive temps up. good luck

The idiot light on the dash cluster will come on at 305 degrees, then it turns off once it cools to 248 degrees.
Once the light comes on, you need to pull over and keep the engine running to cool the tranny.
I have come to understand that between 170 and 200 is acceptable.

I think you're reacting to new information from the gauge. If no warnings have tipped you off before the gauge then you should be okay.
However, a cool to the touch tranny cooler is another situation. Check that system and see if you have any abnormalities. The tranny cooler should be warm if not hot to the touch at operating temps.

Laser temp meter .. should be an option ..

Where do you get the temp sender for the gauge . ? on the out or in line ?

Mine reach the 190 in a really hot day here in Panamá, with AC on and aprox 34ºC ouside temp .. heavy traffic city driving. Other anormal day with a constant speed driving stay between 140 - 160ºF

It sounds like there may be a blockage on the tranny cooler lines. When the truck/tranny warms up feel the lines that run along the left side of the engine block near the upper oil pan flange, they'll be two hard lines one above the other. Those are the tranny cooler lines and should be warm, if not trace them back to where they exit the tranny on the right side. As Tapage mentioned use an IR temp gauge and take the temp of the lines, pan and cooler.

Do you have a Toyota service manual?
