polishing factory 80 wheels

Has anyone polished their stock wheels? My clear coat is looking rough and showing oxidation, I was considering polishing them to a high shine and then putting on a fresh clear coat. Also, while the face of the wheel is smooth, the other areas that are rough could possibly be sanded smooth and polished? I think they are a very attractive wheel, any help would be appreciated.

Yeah, not a fan of chrome, they never last a winter before being rusty. Nobody has wanted shiny OEM wheels?

I'd actually like to make mine look like the two-tone wheels that *I think* came on the 40th anniversary edition. I just don't know how this was done at the factory. From reading here on mud, I know others have rattled canned them and I think others have even powder-coated the wheels.

I'm up for anything, I just don't know what is the best approach - if cost is not the primary factor (its always a factor, or I'd just go in search of new from the factory wheels).

I would do this job .. primer removal spray, then I found that Mothers have a " ball " and a alum polish paste that it's designed for roller ball use .. you can attach the ball to any drill. I will do that in a few weeks ( when get's free time )

there are several write-ups and threads by folks that have refurbished their wheels... without taking the easy route of flat black (which is a color ya know) it might even be in FAQ

peepers and landtank had theirs powdercoated, as well as a guy in the for sale section w/a set of 5 and i think they all came out great. Local place here in NC is 40 bux a wheel for 80 wheels. this includes media blasting, outgassing (necessary for cast wheels) and powder.

trying to remember who has just refreshed theirs.... perhaps Raudrigh, or Airlaird (looks like all his pics are gone)
heres a couple to start... http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-te...ml#post3309063

or just search wheels in 80's tech when you got some time
