80 Towing military trailer with ATV too heavy?

Looking on CL and I found a few m-105 or m-101 trailers. I was wondering how a lifted 2.5, 285 tired, stock gear 80 will pull a trailer like this? I will plan to load it up with a ATV and some camping equiptment. Not much more.
thanks

it should pull it fine. maybe think about getting trailer brakes set up though!

You certainly won't be the fastest rig on the road, but if you take it easy you should be fine.

I towed a 60 series on a double axle flat bed trailer about 650 miles. THAT was heavy.

these are big trailers, I think. At least the 105 is huge and likely too unwieldy for the 80 (and for many other trucks which is why they are cheap). Forgot about the 101 but IIRC is still up there too, unless you are talking about a canadian 101 which is the same as the US 416 which is the small 1/4 ton one you see normally pulled by trucks like an 80 for camping. The 416 is probably too small for an ATV though so you might need to go bigger for that.

Roger that!

I towed a small (rental type) track-hoe on a tandem axle trailer about 50 miles. That sucker was heavy...but the LC never really strained.

Never offered to overheat, definitely slowed down on steep hills...but always kept pulling.

Military trailer and ATV should be a cinch.

I think the M101 is rated at 3/4 ton, the M105 is 1 1/2 ton?? The 101 should be perfect, the 105 might be a little large. I pulled a 416 with my FJ40, and it was perfect. But whatever....Ned

IIRC, the 105 was used with the deuce and a half. Probably 2500 or 3000 lbs empty... A bit much, loaded, for an 80 I would think.

I was looking to buy a trailer a few months ago and there was an M-105 for sale a few minutes from my house. From reading in the Trailer Tech forum, the general consensus I got was that they are too heavy for an 80. I ended up purchasing a Big Tex 29SA utility trailer http://www.bigtextrailers.com (no affiliation) and there are two things I have come to appreciate, compared to a military trailer.

(1) The bed of the military trailers are pretty high off the ground and it makes loading stuff that much harder.

(2) It's nice to be able to unhitch the smaller Big Tex trailer, grab the tongue and move it around by hand. The M-105 would be too heavy for this.

On the flip side, this guy http://forum.ih8mud.com/trailer-tech...y-trailer.html doesn't seem to have much trouble; perhaps you could PM him for advice.

Yeah, I'd recommend checking craigslist in your area for a used utility trailer like pictured above.

I got one practically new, only 1 year old in a 6.5 x 10' size with ramp and easier loading for an ATV for $600.

I got bored and did a SOA swap and gained about 4" of lift on it so it doesn't look too silly behind my monster 80.

A 105 weighs just over 2,000 lbs empty and has a gross weight north of 7,000 lbs. You can easily tow the 105 and a fair amount of cargo behind your 80 and still be within rating for both.

Wow after I saw that pic with the LC and the m-105. It is a little big. I think a smaller mailitary style trailer would fair better for my use. Anyone have any suggestions?

I don't like the look of the onroad trailers, BTW.

As said above it is easy enough to do a spring over and bigger tyres on a utility style trailer and not have to deal with the size and weight of a military trailer for hauling a quad and some camping stuff. I have a 66"x120" deck trailer that I haul a quad on and I am looking for a smaller trailer that will fit better on some of the tighter trails.

I just towed a M416 from Spokane WA to Minot ND. Minus the ATV, I had to leave the king quad at my in-laws because the trailer is about 2" too narrow. I probably could have squeezed it in there with the suspension flex but haven't done the tail gate mod yet so it was a moot point. I had a lot of other crap in the trailer and it towed fine. A supercharger would have been nice with all the hills but on the flats I could go as fast as I normally drive.

Here's a 6x10 I picked up dirt cheap off craigslist a while back

Might not look like much, but it has a heavy duty axle w/brakes and was a pretty solid platform to build on

Added some frame rails and cross bars from leftover stock in the shop and a buddy that works at a steel supply outlet hooked me up with some steel mesh

Made a couple of hook ramps using 1" square tubing and the leftover scrap mesh...

Solid enough to carry some heavy weight, but light enough for my golf cart to tote around easily

And more recently, I picked up a set of FZJ wheels that bolted right on

Co$t breakdown:

Trailer = $200
New lights/wiring = $20
Steel Mesh = $50
Weight Slip = $20
Registration/Tag = $45
Rust Stop Rattle cans = $15
4 FZJ80 wheels and caps = $140 (anyone wanna buy the other two?)

I'm sure you can easily find a smaller 5x7 or smaller that would fit your needs perfectly and still not break the bank

another cheap option is boat trailers, the larger ones have strong axles and you can add a deck to it for the quad

Cruisers pull fairly well. I've pulled my car hauler with a project truck on it with no problems. Only thing I wanted for was more power and brakes on the trailer, but it handled just fine.

I own a US spec M101, and I would not hesitate to pull it with a 600lb atv with my 80. I have pulled it full of a ton of rock with my tahoe.

I don't know that I would pull the M105 - it is a bigger heavier trailer (M101 is 3/4 ton, M105 is 1 1/2 ton.)

Stats:
-1953 M101, converted at some point to 6 lug from original 5 lug, parking break previously removed, converted from pintel hitch to 2" ball hitch - sloppy job that will be rectified some day, but it works.
-5'x8' bed (fits full sheets of plywood or sheetrock
-1500 lb capacity off road, 3500 lb highway.
-Currently running Michelin X1 16x9s (37") on split rims with radial tubes and flaps (try finding these tubes, or someone to mount on split rims... PITA )
-Purchased from friend about 5 years ago for $200 (I maintain that it is the best $200 I have ever spent)
-I spent about $380 and 2 months collecting the tires, flaps, tubes, and getting someone to mount the tires.
-Aftermarket Jack, rewired for 12 Volt (24 volt lights were corroded and destroyed.)
-Looks and complements I get at my frequent trips to home depot: priceless
