part time kit installed and won't come out of 4wd

i have the part time kit in my 92 cruiser and the t case is stuck in 4wd. (the center diff lock switch actuates the 4wd). i press the button to shut off the 4wd (CDL) and the light wont go out and it is still in 4wd. i probed the wires for the cdl motor and i have power going to it when the button is pressed on and no power when the bottom is off.

Have your tried just driving in reverse forwards and backwards a short distance to release possible bind in the drivetrain? I'm not familiar with the 'part time kit', so someone else will probably have a more helpful answer if there isn't a simple solution.

maybe the motor itself is gunked up on the center diff? I think it was tools who posted pics of his actuator motor rebuild if you do a search.

Thats exactly what happens to mine sometimes and going forward and backwards releases it. It is possible that the actuator motor might be sticky. Let us know how you go...

Much more if you not have hubs in and you are over a good traction surface.

No, I'm pretty sure he means that-
1. having the hubs locked
&
2. driving on a high-traction surface
will both magnify the problem of the t-case getting stuck in 4WD due to bind.
If you have manual locking hubs though, unlocking them, and driving in any direction should release the bind in the t-case if that's the problem. If that's not doing it, then maybe it is the actuator for the CDL motor sticking.

the part time kit doesn't affect the CDL operation in terms of mechanically. The CDL impacts the front output shaft which isn't messed with during the ptt kit installation. In terms of electrically, did you plug in the two harnesses that you unplugged during the PTT kit install?

So, figure out why the cdl isn't moving one way or the other. Do some searches on ToolsRUs and center diff lock to get some more troubleshooting ideas or check the FAQ section on this topic.

Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Ahh, that tid bit helps out a lot. Your subject heading made it sound like it was a recent install. Sounds like it's time to dive into the CDL actuator.

Are you sure it is actually in 4wd and the indicator light/sensor is not malfunctioning?

yes i'm sure. the motor dosent make any sounds. the indicator light works. has anyone had trouble with the transmission relay? i have the wiring diagram and ive tried a couple tests. i tried sending power to the motor and its not moving. i think my next step will be to lower the tranny and t case and take out the motor. any hints to check the motor before i dive into it.

Don't do anything until you search on this topic started by ToolsRUs to get pics and hints.
