Cooling system maintenance - what else to do while in there?

97 FZJ80. 140k

This weekend I'll be draining the coolant and getting around to some projects I've been putting off for a while. Finally decided to get motivated because my A/C cut out on hwy 10 just after heading over the Whitewater pass near Palm Springs. It was 113 deg outside so I think the compressor disengaged because I hit whatever that magic coolant temp is. After stopping the engine for a bit, A/C worked fine. I have parts for the following:

New water pump, new blue fan clutch, new thermostat, new belts, new hoses, clean throttle body.

Any other obvious PM that I should do while I have the coolant drained and fan/waterpump out? Anything else I can do to ensure top cooling system performance? Is it normal for the coolant to get that hot when it's 113 out and you're heading uphill over a pass?

Thanks

make sure you still do the blue fan clutch mod. Even new it doesn't come with the mod.

Certainly the "PHH" is going to be one of them.

Good suggestion. Thanks. I've read that it's easier to do the PHH while the valve cover is off. I guess I should visually check out the PHH and if it shows signs of leakage, I'll replace it. If not, I'll replace it when I get to me leaky valve cover gasket and time it with next year's coolant flush.

Looks on the outside can be missleading I would suggest if it has the factory "band and cotter-pin" style clamps get that thing off while it is parked in your garage. Hoses rot from the inside. That is why you NEVER squeeze your coolant hoses (unless you know for sure how old they are) you put splits in the hose on the inside.

http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-te...-phh-173k.html

do some more searching, the PHH is tucked under your intake manifold just above your starter, its only 3 inches long and is best reached by removing your DS wheel and inner fender skirt.....at least you can see it from there, actually getting it replaced will test your tallent as a mechanic.

Make sure you get a six pack before you start. You will have earned a cold one when your done

Good luck.
