I get more confused when I read some of the posts....

Everyone hear is saying "Definately dry spindle bushing" - but most of the posts talk about a "sound" of driving over a washboard......and vibrations and whatnot.

There is no vibration, no pull to either side, no feel of slowing down or breaking suddenly when the sound happens......just that drum brake honking type noise.

While I greased up everything I could think of in there, I don't recall applying grease inside of that. Wouldn't it fill on its own since it has those channels in there?

You need to grease-up the shaft of the birf (where it passes through the spindle) and you need to apply a generous "swipe" of grease on the inside of the bushing.

Nothing on a truck that I'm aware of is capable of greasing itself.
Very few things on a truck's running gear should be assembled dry.
I learned these two truths the hard way, early in my career.

Hey, Cody, definitely go with the gurus on this one. Pull that front end apart again, if you don't remember greasing the spindle bushing. Those grooves are there to help hold grease in place, but the grease needs to put there in the first place prior to reassembly.

Save the money on the DS right now until you see if greasing the spindle bushing solves your noise.

Good luck.

Pulled it all apart again

(I really don't mind this much anymore.....its a billion times easier with a cordless impact gun....I feel like a rapid 1 man race pit crew or something)

I greased everything but the brake pads and rotor surface in there until it looked like my spindle assembly was giving birth to something.

Took it out again, so far no noise. I'll put a few miles on it and see if the sound comes back at all and report back.

Is any thing (the shaft in this case) suppose to touch that bushing during normal operation? I can't remember, it's been so long since I took apart by front axle and don't have my FSM handy at this moment. But if the shaft indeed touches the bushing, is it safe to say that some thing is bent or out of spec?

I believe, from having mine and a couple others apart, that that acts as a thrust bushing against the backside of the bell on the birf. The other end of the equation is the last snapring outside the driveplate.
There is constant rotating contact against the bushing, which is why it howls if it's dry.

Sounds like the noise my front end started making on the interstate about a mile before it welded itself together.

Well 30 miles or so of around town driving after everything was warmed up.....and no more sound.

Its scary to think about how much the local dealership would have probably took me for if I would have let them figure it out....

All the expensive tools are paying for themselves.
