Bought a LHD diesel 80! (pictures now available, see below)

Hi all,
Have a look at what I chanced upon last week, for sale locally by someone who had brought the vehicle back from the UK (it's LHD though!). 1992 HZJ80 with the smooth, reliable 1HZ non-turbo 6 cylinder diesel engine, and 5 speed manual transmission. Very stock, and what is referred to as the "poverty pack" interior
(vinyl seats and floor covering, no AC, no fancy instrumentation, no sun-roof, etc.). Barn doors in the back. I really like it. It's in very good condition, only 215,000 kms. Just came back from my mechanic who pronounced it a clean bill of health. A bit hard to shift in second and third when cold, but smooth after it warms up. Engine starts right up after 1-2 seconds of glowplugs. Bit of rust
to address at the bottom of the rear windows but otherwise very solid.

Even though I presently own a very solid 1982 BJ60 with the indestructible 3B engine (very little rust, only 230,000 kms), I just couldn't pass up the 80 series. So I'll likely be putting up the BJ60 for sale soon, and will notify this list in case of interest (gets 25-30 Miles per imperial gallon, can run on biodiesel and is a very good candidate for WVO and turbo installation).

Now I can focus my "expedition vehicle" preparation on the HZJ80 (had not had much time to carry out the mods on the BJ60, since I had only acquired that last Fall).

Thanks to this forum for putting together such a useful faq and how-to section, which will be extremely helpful to me in my ownership of this interesting vehicle.

Cheers,
--Robert

Just saw your score on the registry this morning; CONGRATS!!

Never seen the vinyl option, talk about poverty but you gotta love that for cleaning up after a wheeling trip. and barn doors are just

Dont neglect to search around the diesel tech section as some of our info here will be more limited to gasser knowledge.

I really dig this truck. Too . I like the "different" factor of barn doors, but being a red-blooded American boy, I've spent many a night sitting on a tailgate sipping a frosty beverage and staring out at the stars. How do you like them?

Oh! Were the sliding windows available with the barn doors, or is that part of the "Poverty Pack"?

I'd LOVE to see some more pics...

The US is too spoiled, we don't get those awesome pieces of machinery here.

Thanks for the positive feedback, it is a neat truck.
I'll post some pics on flickr and send the link in the next few days. Barndoors I find practical and different, though I agree that tailgates have their advantages! THe truck is too new to me to have an opinion on how I feel about the barn doors. No sliding windows on mine.
cheers.

the barn doors are everywhere in oz, but our cars are RHD, the hzj80's are a tough rig they just keep going, it might be slow but reliable.

What a score!

I have read accounts of problems with the barn doors squeaking when closed, having hinges break, etc... I'm sure one of the Australians or Kiwis on 'Mud can give you some PM advice on caring for them.

What I dig is the flareless look. IMO it's way cooler looking than the bloated flares on the regular market 80s. The trim level you have reminds me of a fleet vehicle from the UN or Red Cross or something. Somewhere around here I have an Australian 4x4 magazine with a photo essay using a rental-fleet 81. Has the vinyl interior and stuff - It looks good!

FYI - the sliding rear windows were only available on 81s with the third row seat hardware. No third row option, no sliders.

Dang, I was hoping to have the first LHD 81 in Canada... but it looks good on you.

The squeaking can be fixed by replacing the upper catch and striker on the RHS door from the '95-'97, I think. Even though Toyota Australia refused to admit there was an issue with the doors squeaking, the later model had slightly different (plastic covered, or teflon coated or something!) catches.

A mate gave me the specific part numbers years ago but I have misplaced them.

BTW Don't worry too much about 2nd and 3rd being a bit hard to select when cold. It seems to be pretty standard for an H150 with more than delivery miles on it. You will probably only get another 1/2 million km out of it before it needs rebuilding!

So any feedback on where you got it from (source in the UK), who found it and how was the transport.

And if I'm not prying too much...the cost of course.

Craig.

Hi guys,
Glad you're finding my recent acquisition interesting!

They're 31's, though they do "look" smaller than the 31"s on my BJ60. I have a good set of BFG AT's to put on it.

Thanks! That's good to know. It actually shifts very smoothly when warm. Actually, the records I got with it show that the gearbox and clutch were replaced around 170,000 kms in the UK (it has 215 on it now), so I should be good for a while indeed...

THe previous owner bought it at a used car lot in the UK. He drove it a few months over there and got it shipped back to Canada by his employer, then put it up for sale 6 months later because he is upgrading his house and needs the cash. Price? Well, that's between him and I. Suffice it to say that he was originally asking $16K for it but I got it for considerably less...

It originally was licenced in Belgium Wayne. Why someone would bring a LHD into the UK is beyond me, but the papers show that it was owned by a guy in the UK from at least 2002 on. My good fortune that it's LHD, I wouldn't have bought it if it had been RHD.

I'll get some better pictures taken today and post on flickr and give you guys the address. (I'll also post the BJ60 ad on MUD and have a flickr site for its pictures, later this week.)

Thanks for your interest and comments.

That's what was bugging me. The bumpers are painted. I don't know about 'Cruisers, but it seems like the US is one of the few places they charge you more for painted bumpers than chrome ones!

door handles are chrome, which is correct for the version, if those are chrome the bumper and mirrors would have been non boby color

and that color...look 93+ to me..

but it matters not....cool rig

<shiver>

That story is so remarkably similar to the one told to me about my German spec LJ73 that it's frighting. The PO(S) wasn't named Baranya was he?

It looks like a heck of a score though. Its funny to see all of us clambering over the poverty pack version and snubbing the luxo JDMs. I too, prefer the vinyl.

Not that hard .. just take a fly to Panamá buy one and drive it back to US or ship it by boat.
