Single Din Stereo Below Double Din

I know I've seen it before. Cruisers have a double din screen or something where the factory stereo was then below that (where the cig lighter and receipt holder is) they put a single din stereo. I've seen a lot of CB's in this location as well. But I'd really like to know what it took to put a stereo there, especially on the earlier models.

I've been looking at some of the Crutchfield solutions like the Universal Under Dash Kit:
Universal Underdash Kit Put a new stereo into your hard-to-fit vehicle! at Crutchfield.com
(Which is too big)

And the Single Din Pocket
Universal DIN Pocket at Crutchfield.com

And it looks like I gotta cut some cross members in there to have any of that fit. Anybody do this method?
