Dynamat question

I ordered 100sq/ft of Dynamat (actually one of its knockoffs). I plan on doing all four doors, and the rear cargo compartment in preparation for installing a new stereo/speakers/sub woofer. Where exactly on the doors should I apply it for best effect? I ask because in my mind, it would make sense to put it on the outer skin of the door to minimize sound bleed-through both ways, but from all the pictures I see of professional audio installs, the installer put dynamat on the innermost skin (piece the door panel clips to). How should I go about this? Thanks!

the short answer is: put it everywhere you can. I recommend using the dynamat to create a 100% barrier like the stock plastic behind the door panel. it's a little extra work but well worth it if you're investing big $$$ on your system. It also reduces road noise a lot. Cut sections to fit and then on the sections where you don't want it to stick just stick some to itself on the back. if that doesn't make sense just pm me and I'll explain over the phone.

No, I understand perfectly. So should I worry about sticking any inside the door, on the outer skin? Thanks for the reply!

When we did my friends car we did ANYWHERE we could stick it. This meant on the door just under the panel AND putting it in the outdoor skin as well. We just rolled it up, slid it through an opening and went to town. Car makes me think of what the inside of a coffin would sound like. Assuming the radio is off

Before I did mine I read-up on a few "audiophile" how-to forums. There were, of course, as many opinions as there were members, but the consensus seems to be that you need to focus on the inner door skins, basically replacing the factory plastic vapour barrier. Cover all the holes in the door as described above.

You will be somewhat limited on where you can place the sheets inside the door's outer skin, because things like the window regulators get in the way. I focused on using the acoustic sheeting behind each speaker, as recommended in one of the forums I read.

FWIW, 100sq/ft is more than enough to do your entire truck, including the cargo area, with enough left over to line the outer door skins near the speakers and any other easy-to-reach areas. I "doubled up" on large flat areas such as the cargo area floor and the footwells. 100sq/ft won't be enough to do the roof, but that's probably overkill. Still, if I ever have the need to re/re my headliner I'll probably dynamat the roof at that time. Couldn't hurt.

I also went to the local race shop and bought a roll of sound deadener for the footwells. It's basically asphalt sheeting. It's not adhesive, so it can't be placed on vertical surfaces, but it's ideal for floors. Fits between the Dynamat and the OEM carpet. Way cheaper than the adhesive stuff.

BTW, this is the adhesive stuff I used:

B-Quiet sound deadening materials - B-Quiet Extreme

Worked out to be CAD$1.40 sq/ft at the price break of 100sq/ft. It's good stuff and less than half the price of Dynamat.

100 ft^2 = 10 ft x 10 ft. Your entire truck, questionable, but
YMMV.

I did like NLX and put it on the inside of the skin and replaced the vapor barrier. Supposed to have some thermal insulation value as well. Gives the doors a more solid thunk when they shut. Get some Windex and clean off the inside of the sheet metal first.

ya, forgot to say make sure it's super clean. I use denatured alcohol to remove grease/dirt and a heat gun when applying the material.
