Belts change, why do they keep going slack

This is the second time I have changed the belts since I purchased my LC the first set went slack quite quickly and had to keep tensioning them up quite often as they start to squeak on the first start up of the day, the last lot I changed delaminated in the end.

I changed the about 3000 miles ago and have had to adjust them twice now and they are again starting to make a noise and look a bit worn, even tho they have not been on long, has anyone else had this problem?

They tend to have a squeak on every revolution and it's not a continuous noise.

I use the belts I get from the local Toyota garage, they are made by Mitsubishi, it is always the double belts that I get the problem with, and the single bely has never been a problem, never have to adjust that one at all.

I deal with all sorts of V belts where I work, so I know how much they need to deflect when tensioning.

Are you tightening them up adequately?

Hi 74... yes I am tensioning them up to the point where I think I am doing them to tight.

I am an engineer in a big papermill and fit v belts from smaller than whats on the Cruisers to belts that are 20 feet long and are on pulleys that are 6 feet diameter and been doing that for the last 34 years, so yes, I think I am tensioning them up about right.

I am wondering if one of the pulleys is out of round, causing the stretching of the belts?

IDK, I still think they may be too loose...

Have you sighted down the pulleys to make sure that they are in line? Do any of the pulleys or idlers wobble when spinning? Are you tightening the pivot bolt back down?

Is your idler pulley causing any noise, perhaps sticking?

That was my thought.

When I changed mine for the first time, I was loosening and tightening the wrong bolt (there are 2 of similar size in the pivot area).

Not second guessing you snowwolf, but sometimes the most obvious is overlooked. I have plenty of experience with that.

I think I will change the idler pulley next time I have to change the belts, but it looks and feels fine, I know it sounds silly, but was looking at the belts while it was running yesterday and it looks like the crank pulley is out of round??? it may be an optical illussion ( I hope) but will check it out with a DTI when it stops raining here :-(

I just ordered a set of belts for my 94 so I've been viewing this thread. I have one question though. What is a DTI?

Proper belt routing? I've heard of Toyota dealers doing it wrong and also missing upper tensioners.

The belts are all correct as per the book where they run.

The DTI is a "dial test indicator" it has a magnetic base with measuring device attached to it, when you revolve the shaft it will indicate if the pulley is rotating out of round, I have not tried it yet as I am working all weekend :-(
