Operation "Here Comes The Boom".

Dug some old stereo equipment out of the closet today (from my 'rice rocket' days) and started ripping out the old stuff from the cruiser. I'll be changing the cruiser to a 4 +1 speaker system using the pioneer replacements up front, these 6.5" Mid bass drivers in the rear and my 12 Diamond sub to fill out the bottom end. I had some Kicker separates that I wanted to use in the front, but they were WAY too deep. This all used to sound really good in my Integra, so we'll see how it sounds in the larger environment of the cruiser.

On a side note, the old 'sub' location was an exact fit for the new mid bass driver. I put the other mid-bass on the opposite wall.

The amp is a Kicker 700x5 (rated at 975 watts). PLENTY of power. When I ran it my Integra I had to turn the gains down to zero or I'd rattle my 5.25". I couldn't find a better spot to mount it than here. I'll cut the rear panel to cover the mid-bass and most of the panel. It should look pretty slick when it's all said and done.

Right now I have all the seats out of the cruiser to run cable. Man- it needs a good cleaning.

Anyway- if anyone is looking for a direct replacement speaker for the stock 'sub' location- this is another option.

I kept telling myself the same thing... with all of this crap sitting in my closet. Yes. I'm an idiot. I guess I figured one day I'd build a cargo shelf and integrate it there. I finally told myself yesterday that I was stupid for letting this stuff sit for 4 years when I had all the basic equipment to pull it off.

Yes, the amp is huge. You can't fit it under a seat. I thought about attaching it to the back of a seat, but there are times I only have 2 seats in the truck... so that wouldn't work. The only real viable option was to build a cargo deck and attach it there, or put it on an interior wall. The spot below the slider actually works out well. Only one corner is not supported right now, and I can bend a bracket from flat stock to make that work out.

I thought about trying to put it on the inside of the exterior skin, but I've been getting a little crazy with running into trees lately and one hard hit to that panel would do the amp in.

So far I'm pretty happy with the way it's turned out. I didn't cut any corners on routing the cables so that won't look cheesy. The 1/0 gauge power wire is a real bear. In fact- I've got no power to the amp right now because my battery terminal clamp isn't big enough to handle the 1/0 post adapter. I need to address that this week.

Oh, when I removed the factory speakers from the front door the cones were completely torn at the rubber membrane. No wonder my sound was poor.

I picked up a set of used pioneer replacements on e-bay for $10. Bought them from a guy with a good rep/ feedback (over 6000) he said he tested them and they were nearly new... so we'll see how that turns out.

So far the only $$ I have in this is the power wire kit (60$ from the local Toyota dealership) and the $10 pioneer speakers.

Holy cow, 1/O cable Just exactly how many amps do you expect that amp to draw?

According to 12vdc table you can carry 350 amps with 1/O cable. Do you really need a wire that mondo? You must have one helluva amplifier!!!

I just bought the kit that the Toyota dealership had in stock. It was on clearance. I should have plenty of power available for the amp now. The ground wire was 1/0 as well.

I just finished up running all the rest of the wires. The hardest part was running new cable to the front doors. Trying to get wire through the boots was tough. I don't have any front door speakers to hook them up to yet though. I don't have all of the interior plastic back on yet- I'm taking the rest of the afternoon off to tend to my smoker....

I'll go snap a pic and post it up though...

Here's the box 'o boom:

The cover for the amp is painted in the same color shift paint. Looks pretty nice actually.

Here's your 1/0 Ali:

Oooooh, Daddy likes BLING!

Seeing as how Iowa is getting flooded, shouldn't you be installing a set of Pontoons instead?

The OEM snorkle should arrive via Japan today.... I'll attempt the install this next weekend.

No, I still have to cut the panel to fit around the amp. I'm also going to get some type of insulation for the rear panels and tailgate. I'm thinking I'll just use something like what they use for hot water heaters... nicely wrapped in plastic.

I also don't have the shroud/ cover on the amp yet either. I need to get my power wires hooked up first. For that I need 1/0 spade connectors, which I need to visit the local stereo shop to pick up. That should be done this afternoon (crossing fingers). So, I should have tunes tonight or tomorrow.

Doc,
You're turning into a pimp !!!
I say this because I'm jealous. It's a good thing to get your upgrades out of the way before you have that second little one running around, otherwise, things just don't seem to get finished.

5 weeks and counting!

I've been meaning to get around to doing this for YEARS. I'm really good at procrastinating.

Isn't there enough room for it within the quarter?

Looks like it might be a tight squeeze, but I'd rather do that than cut the outer panel

You know what, I han't thought of doing that. I'll take a look at it tonight.

I am having trouble getting spade terminal ends for a zero gauge cable. I may have to put in a distribution block to size down the cable right before the amp. Hmmmm...... Back to the stereo shop!

With power wires that size already run you could easily assign them double duty to terminals that allow for serious inverter power. Are you hookin' into a deep cycle?

Yeah, the plan is to run a medium to small inverter in the back as well. Double battery is happening next fall or winter.

I actually hit a pretty good snag on this project tonight. I got everything wired up and the sub wasn't firing. Swapped wires out to a regular speaker outlet and it was working... then swapped input cables to the other amps (this amp is actually three tied together..) still nothing from the sub... Called Kicker Tech support and tried a few more things. I ended up pulling the amp out and I'm sending it to Kicker tomorrow. I think the Sub channel is funked. Hopefully it won't cost too much to repair. So far I'm into this thing for less than $100 and I'd like to keep it that way.

I laughed when I read your thread. I just did the same thing. I had a Rockford Fosgate 150HD (old school cheater amp-about 500 watts continuous bridged) tucked away in a box along with a couple of 12" Kicker XPLs, and a Kenwood 6 disc changer (along with 2 other monster Kenwood amps that will remain out of service). I had already installed all of the necessary wiring to run a sub and the cd changer when I installed my Kenwood double din DPX301 head unit last year. I've been dragging my feet on any new mods (or finishing mods in limbo) until recently.

About a month ago I hooked it all up. Not too extravagant, but it is nice to have full volume when I want to turn it up. I only used one of the 12" XPLs in a sealed box (the original box for two 12s cut in half and resealed) under the rear deck. The Fosgate just barely fit under my driver seat about one foot away from my 2/0 wire terminals on the 2300 watt inverter under my passenger seat. It was like it was meant to be. I had to turn the power gains way down on the sub. Sounds very good though for the $25 bucks I had to spend on the mega speaker cable from radio shack.

Hopefully your amp will only need an easy repair. Cheap boom is nice to have.
