Supercharged and more...

After eight months of being down (Due to many different factors that have been posted elsewhere) the motor rebuild has started.

The details of the build; First and foremost, I am not assembling this. Robbie aka PowderPig is doing the work and I am merely trying to avoid getting in his way.

The block was bored over 1.25mm and decked five thousandths. I had JE piston make custom pistons and rings.

I'm using ARP Head Studs in place of the factory head bolts (ARP part number 203-4205 Toyota Supra 2jza80).

A picture of the Cometic Multi-Layer Steel Head gasket (I apologize, I can't find the Cometic part number, but when I do I will update). Visible under the HG is blue Hylomar Gasket dressing.

The head received a complete work over. The head was decked two thousandths, ported, polished and seats cut.

A couple of coats of paint to start with. The block is flat now, but will get re shot in a semi or gloss because we didn't like the paint we used. The old water pump is pictured, however a new one is on it's way.

The injectors were sent off to WitchHunter Performance to be cleaned and flow matched.

They arrived showing a 3.7% difference and left showing a 0.9% balance.

Cylinder

1 303
2 304.5
3 303
4 303
5 304.5
6 303

cc/min@ 43.5 psi

These will be fed with the Twin Turbo Supra Fuel pump (Toyota part # 23221-46110) that replaced the stock pump. This is not the only addition to the fueling issues for the 93-94 Superchargers.

More to follow later when Robbie gets back from the Rubicon.

i'm excited about this build! THis is just what i want to do, i just don't have the option to let Robbie do the work. Also, i would bolt back up one of Landtank's turbo manifolds and turbocharge it after the rebuild.

Can you tell us more information about the three layer steel headgasket?
I looked on Cometic's website and I believe it is stock number C4530-053 and runs about $214? I had to look in the sport compact page to find it.
It's must be sweet to live near Robbie.

It came with the truck. I had owned the truck for about a week and a half before the HG blew on my way to compete in the Expedition Trophy. I was about 30 miles from the staging area when it went (As in hadn't made it there yet).

I'll get the part number and compare. That must be msrp, because I have it listed on my invoice from the machine shop at $171.00.

I live a couple of states away from Robbie. However it has been fully worth it in every way to have him come out here and do this. He knows Land Cruisers so well, that you can hold up a nut or bolt from the engine compartment and he will immediately identify it and it's position.

He is fast, intimate with the platform and a professional in every sense if the word. Besides that he's also a very cool and interesting person to talk with.

I just re-read your post. Mine is the five layer gasket, not a three. From my understanding they will build them to your compression needs.

No kidding.

I'm not even going to be able to park near his, much less keep up with him on the road/trail.

Are these Cometic MLS headgaskets pretty much bullet-proof?

What are the pros and cons of using this over the new style Toyota part?

Now Jack, we both know that's not the case. Especially when I have to follow your lead on the trails to keep from getting lost, or keep calling you to find things out about the cruiser.

From everything I have read and heard the MLS gaskets are indeed pretty bullet proof. This combined with the ARP Studs should eliminate the potential for a HG failure again.

The only con I know of is the cost. The way I justified it in my head was, I asked myself "How much I was willing to pay to do it the right way, so that the next time I'm 30 miles from a destination, be it the Expedition Trophy, the Nevada Trophy or just a trip with the family I won't have to worry about a HG failure." It was a pretty easy decision for a few dollars more.

The cost of the custom made Cometic was $171.00. The cost of the complete engine rebuild gasket kit that the machine shop sent home with the block was $199.00 That gasket kit is made by "Rock-Gasket" by the way and still contains the OLD STYLE HG. Beware. A phone call to Cdan (Cdan kicks ass!) can get you his "Kit" for a little more.

I ordered the Cdan "Kit" (And I say kit parenthetically because he makes one for you as there is no pre assembled one) and used the other gaskets from it. we've used the OEM gaskets from CDan and just set the factory HG aside.

The new OEM HG is a great gasket and I haven't heard of anyone having any issues with one. You just can't play with the compression with it. and unless your running forced induction of some type that won't be an issue for you. I don't know what the price of an OEM HG goes for as mine came in Dan's "Kit".

Yup! Although I don't think fast is the word, just not slow.

When I compare mine (bored .040 and SC'd) to mountjoy_99's (just SC'd), it's got noticeably more nut, and I have a boatload more weight.

Congrats 24, I'm excited to see this thing get finished!!!

So your Cometic MLS head gasket has custom bore dia. and stack height? Could you still check the part number they sent? I'm still curious if the part number listed in post #8 is the correct part for stock application.

Also curious about Robbie's impression of this gasket. Aside from the ability to adjust compression, does he think it would it be a good gasket for a stock motor? The oem head gasket for the 2JZ-GE and 2JZ-GTE inline 6 motors are MLS and widely accepted as bulletproof. The 3FE and 1FZ must have been designed before this type of gasket was approved for use internally at Toyota. I've searched for a MLS gasket for the 1FZ before, but come up empty. I know the new oem gasket is vastly improved and now seems to be a closed issue, but a MLS gasket could be another great option. MLS is now the industry-standard solution for cast iron blocks with aluminum heads.

BTW, the rebuild looks great! Good luck with it.

Please post some links for more information on these 2 statements. I am not challenging this but I would like to do some research and I don't want to hi-jack this thread or get it off on a HG tangent. I don't think the cost (~$170) of a MLS HG would be a deterrent for most of us.

Very nice. . Ported head too.. I would like to do that when I do my rebuild (don't know when). Could you provide some numbers on porting, i.e. how much was ported, what was the stock measurement and etc.. I'd appreciate it..
