How to distinguish an FJZ80

Ok this is probably a newbie question, but I have to ask... How do you determine that an LC is an FJZ80? Can you tell by the VIN, the year, or someother external way? Meaning... if someone out there unknowingly has an FJZ80, how could you tell (without seeing it) if it is an FJ80 or an FJZ80?

If this is obvious, please forgive the dumb question...

The way I ID them usually is that the wheels are different (4 kinda double spokes and 15" rim on an FJ, 5 spokes and 16" rim on an FZJ)

Could be a few quick ways, Engine, wheels, IIRC 3rd row seats, VIN should tell, That or the door sticker

Wheels..
FJ80 has dual four spoke, FZJ80 has a 5 spoke
Engines...
FJ80 has the 3FE FZJ80 has the 1FZ
3rd row, Again IIRC..
FJ80 didnt have 3rd row or the brackets on the rear wheel wells FZJ80 has them.
Im sure there are alot of other ways, Just a though

As Cory pointed out, the wheels are the easiest way. Next is the flares; they are different (narrower) and a few FJ80s were flareless. Then the tailpipe is on the left side and they are a little bit "taller" than an FZJ80 but that is really hard to tell.

Other than those things, I can't tell an FJ80 from an FZJ80 without opening the bonnet.

Thanks a bunch. I did not realize it was that easy. I assumed that 93+ were a combination of FJ and FJZ but that clears it up. One mystery down, a gagillion to go...

I believe the 3rd row was an option on all 80-Series; FJ80 and FZJ80. The picture of the FJ80 that Cory posted has 3rd row seats. Maybe it is an early FZJ80 with rear drums and retro-fitted FJ80 wheels but I'd bet it is an FJ80 with 3rd row seats as an option.

FYI, retrofitting 3rd row seats in an 80-series truck that didn't have the option is a major hassle. The cargo area is built differently and the brackets DO NOT bolt in. I am sure someone could do it if they wanted but it is non-trivial.

Huh? Some of that is wrong.

The tailpipe on ANY 80 series is on the RIGHT side, and several FJ80's DID come with 3rd row seats, including mine.

91-92 VIN will say "FJ80", frame will also say "FJ80". 91-92 have 4-spoke 15" wheels, 93+ have 5-spoke 16" wheels.

And just for kicks and giggles, 1997's "sombrero" logo is centered on the rear hatch.

I stand corrected. I knew the exhaust manifolds exit on the left side and I thought the whole exhaust went along the left frame rail out to the rear. I guess it crosses over underneath.

93-94's are oddballs. Some had semi-floater rear axles with drum brakes. And they all had that funky PAIR junk...

62's are like that. I assume Toyota routed the early 80 series exhaust toward the passenger side due to the gas tank....The exhaust crosses over the rear driveshaft, just behind the TC, then leads to the rear.

That would have been a nice option... I had to tint mine myself.

Well one nice thing about that is, all the tint will all match in color. No one has anything to match the factory tint for the front doors on fzj80s.

I've been keeping an eye out for a wrecked fj80 with all the glass so I can tint them all to match.....yeah I'm obsessive like that.

What about the LX-450?

Sooooo, here is one more area where I have to plead ignorance. Is the LX-450 still considered an FJ80? Thanks!

The point being.......the FZJ 80 has a tiny bit more HP (power).....be it only a littel bit more, its still more power, thus resulting in him or her getting the pump faster....thus, filling up sooner.....thus, pulling away from the fuel station sooner.

The 93+ have a third tail light in the back window, the FJ80's did not. That is how I tell.

A previous owner of mine had the front tinted light and I think it matches fine....
