Belts Keep Breaking!!!! HELP

I own a 1996 Lexus LX470 and my belts keep breaking causing the engine to overheat. It has done this three times. The last time is busted my radiator. One of the belts busted today and caused the car to overheat again. I am using Gates belts each time. Does anyone have any suggestions that I can give my mechanic? It seems to happen after I pull my boat or pontoon. HELP

The moderators will probably move it anyway, but you should searchthe 80 series forum as I am sure this has been discussed before. Try out the search function at the top of each forum.

I remember a gal on here that had this problem using aftermarket belts that weren't routed properly. My suggestion is to use Toyota belts, be sure all of the pullies are spinning freely and that they are routed properly.

Use OEM belts, and I'm moving you over to the 80 series section.

Oversize and under size belts don't last very long. Perfect fit makes all the difference.

My guess is that you have a bearing and/or pulley problem. The most common is the idler pulley below the alternator, if the bearing goes bad it can lockup and take out the belts. Also look carefully at all of the pulleys, if any are bent, have gouges, etc in the area where the belts touch it will ruin belts.

Gates are good belts and run fine on the 80. Mine are Green Stripe, have been on for 2 years and ~30K miles. Had them off before Cruise Moab, replacing the alternator bearings, they looked great, nice wear pattern, so put them back on. Due to the cogged inside profile and the flat idler pulley, they make more noise than the OEM, but that is the only issue.

There is little reason to run after market belts, good quality ones are about the same money as OEM from Dan. But if you ruin/break belts and need them quick, it good to know that they will work. Brother Rob's rig came with Gates on it, they had ~50k miles when he replaced them with OEM.

My '97 came with cogged belts from the PO, and I found that they did not wear evenly. There were several cogs/teeth that had worn down to almost nothing, and would slip quite badly when the belts got wet. I could easily see them breaking in a situation like this. No idea on milage as they were from the PO.

Running cogged belts would be fine in the short term, but I woudn't want to run them for long periods of time.

Someone recently had the same problem. The cause of the problem ended up being improper routing around the idler pulley. The dealer routed the belts around the idler which is incorrect. The top side of the belt is supposed to just touch the idler.

x2 on the bearings. It happened to me on a Runner. Shreaded a brand new belt due to a bad alternator bearing.
