I know, another "What's it worth" Thread
Hello,
First of all I would like to apologize for making another one of the probably fairly unpopular "what is it worth" thread, but I am deciding if selling my 80 is a good idea, but for the life of me I have no idea what it is worth, so I was wondering if some of you guys could help me out. The reason I have no real good idea of what it is worth is the varying prices I see, such as people saying to offer a dealer $4000 for a '94, then hear $9000 is not a bad price for ones with similar mileage and features. I guess I should start off saying what my rig is: It is a 1994 with 151,000 miles on it. Unfortunately is does not have lockers, but I see most being purchased need either a head-gasket or front axle rebuild. When I got mine I replaced the head gasket and rebuilt the front axles, replaced a rear brake line (just because), rebuilt most of the A/C system, and replaced all fluids with AMSoil fluids. I painted the wheels and the bumpers black because the 14 years has taken its toll in the rig. The only negative parts are that there isn't an antenna, but reception is fine, and there are two small dings on the drivers door (probably from all the previous owners trips to the mall). Everything is in good shape, there is a little rust, but it is fairly minimal for a truck so old. I was wondering if somebody could help me out and give me some type of idea what is a reasonable price for the truck, and even if I should consider selling it. Again I apologize for a topic which probably makes everybody cringe, but I appreciate any input. Thanks again. |

It is in New England, but I did not come from their originally. Also I forgot to add the interior is leather and in very good shape for the age, only some minor cracks but no rips.

One of the MAJOR factors on the price of these things is where it is located and where it spent its life. You already have 1 big strike against you and that is that it is not locked. The 2nd strike is that it has "a little rust." The majority of the members on this board are outdoor enthusiasts which means they are looking for a capable vehicle in good mechanical condition and for a reasonable price. A few are still buying these for daily drivers and/or family weekend haulers. Those are the minority.
If you live anywhere other than AZ, CA, NM, NV then I would say $4,000. If you live in NM then it would be worth at least $10,000 as long as it is not green. ![]() -B- __________________ 97 FZJ80 - Wing Nut MAF, locked, 315 Toyos, 4.88s, Slee 4", George's sliders, Slee bumpers, M12000, OBA, Outback drawers + other stuff. Does the fact that the head-gasket and front axles were replaced, or does that not really matter too much.
Thanks for the help. |

i imagine your sale price could be affected by the marketing channel you use - ie to the public or within the 80 community.

You do have one big strike - the New England thing. One winter there is worse than 50 in the south or desert west. I won't consider buying anything that has EVER been in a snow / salt location, but others - like the ones who live there - will.
As far as the locker thing goes - its the truck that matters, not the lockers. Lockers are a fixation for some people on this forum. The factory lockers weren't / aren't all that hot anyway. If they haven't been used then they are prone to either not work or have problems. If they have been used then the rig was probably wheeled hard and I'd much rather have a nice unlocked truck than one that's had the snot driven out of it. As for desirability. Nice 80's everywhere sell themselves. There are plenty of dogs, average trucks and very few really NICE ones. People snap up the good ones quick no matter where they are. And not just four wheeler, camper, outdoor enthusiasts. Color matters too like all vehicles. Green is the bottom as mentioned. You won't get $10K based on what you described, but you might get $6K. You have to be honest with yourself. A description really isn't worth anything for valuation purposes and the only people who care about your head gasket and axle work are here. This is the worst place to sell a nice 80 because everyone here willl just rip it apart from a technical standpoint. You'll get anywhere from $5-6K locally. A decent 80 never sells for less than that anywhere. __________________ 1997 40th, One Owner, Front 850 OME + 30MM Poly Spacers / Rear 860 OME, Castor Correction, Bilsteins, ARB, 9000# Superwinch, Hella 1000's / 500's, Landtank seat rail extensions, Husky Liners F-R, 285 Revo's. |

Oh yeah - put an antennae on the thing. You won't get $3K without it.

Tough call. A 14 year old vehicle with 151k on it that gets 13mpg average is not exactly popular at the moment. It's going to take a long time to sell it but if you advertise widely enough and have some unique angle (carries 8 people, full time 4wd, twin-cam 6 cylinder, etc) it will help. Sadly, the engine work probably is not worth mentioning because saying things like "recent $3700 worth of work" on a $6000 truck just alerts people they're buying a truck that's expensive to maintain. Maybe that's just me, but I prefer a vehicle that has no major engine work in its history versus one that has had a major repair.

Your best bet is to look through the classifieds here and see what some have sold for. Some have sold immediately and others have ads running for months with no takers. That should give you a ballpark price. You can also do a completed auction search on ebay and see which vehicles sold and which had no takers.
In one sentence you mention the only negatives are little things like door dings. In the next you say everything is in good shape but there is a little rust. That "little rust" will scare off a large portion of potential buyers. Don't expect an accurate estimate without pic's of some of these details. __________________ '97 FZJ80 You're a bottle-cap away from pushing me too far |

where in new england are you? The rust concern is overblown by those not living in rust areas. A clean truck from south of Rt 80 with a few seasons in New England is desirable in New England, a little rust is no big deal when every other 14 year old rig is completely rotten.
Don't let the price of gas lowball your selling price. Use the usual benchmarks: KBB and NADA, adjust for service issues and mods. Cruisers sell themselves to people who want a Cruiser. They don't do so well if the buyer would be just as happy in a Blazer/Exploder/AstroVan and is only interested because the ad said AWD and third row seating. A head gasket and axle service will mean a lot to a new Cruiser buyer who knows Cruisers. But as a rule of thumb, don't put the word rust in your ad unless you have serious rot that will affect driveability/inspection. In New England, the buyer will determine if it's rusted or not based on their definition of rust. __________________ 1996 FZJ80 not-locked, Emu 861/862, ARB, Slee sliders and skids, 285 Nitto TGs, Scan Gauge, hopefully exploring somewhere in North America. www.purplelizard.com |

Is it really worth selling a paid off vehivle for $4000-$5000. Yes gas is expensive but so is a new car payment. If you are going to do anything that requires the extra space an 80 provides I would keep it for those random occasions. You have put in the money to make this car last another 100,000 mi but that value will not carry any weight to a future owner. I say keep it and buy a vespa.

As far as the rust thing, I bought the car last summer, and it was garaged over the winter. It was originally from RI so there is just minor surface rust, nothing at all major, just not as clean underneath as a car from NM.
The reason I want to sell it is to buy a P38 Range Rover, I use the 80 and like the space and capability, but a Range has that as well, but with better gas mileage and similar price, but since it seems as if the 80 is only worth $4000, I might as well keep it and buy a MKIII Range in two years or so. |

I live in England most of the year and know lot's of people with Range Rovers. I suggest you keep the 80 to drive everytime the Range Rover is in the shop....
![]() Also, better check those mileage numbers. They are pretty good in Europe but that's with diesel engines (but not as good as my diesel 100) but I thought no better than 14 or so with a petrol engine. But they do look nice, especially with a tall blonde with high cheek bones behind the wheel. __________________ 1985 4Runner - ROTM WarDamnEagle's 85 4Runner 1997 FZJ80 - locked and stock 2007 HDJ100 - DD .....and these are just the Toyotas |

I do all of my own work with many of my ASE Master certified technician buddies.
I know they get 14mpg around town, my 80 gets 9mpg, so thats quite a bit better percentage wise, but it seems as if the 80 is worth so little it wouldn't be feasible to sell it and get into a P38 without spending over $1k. Thanks for the help. |
