Front wheel, Drive Flange Cap comes off

Guys,

My little sis got this 80 1993, about 2 months ago, I noticed gear lube sprayed all over the front right wheel. So I took the fancy plastic toyota cap off and the drive flange cap (steel) had fallen off. So I put it back on, tapped it with a hammer. Done! I thought.......
Now I noticed it again, why is this thing coming off? Is the front right axle walking around that much and pushing it out?

Thanks

You're referring to the removable grease cap that is a press fit onto the drive flange? If that's falling off it probably just needs a slight bend to fit more securely. I usually need to work it off with a small flathead screwdriver.

The inner axle can't move outward enough to knock it out.

I would be more concerned with the gear oil coming out of the drive flange than the grease cap falling off.

Yes, that's what I'm trying to describe. You think all I need to do is tweek it abit? I'll give it a try, I actually thought that was the fix, but that sounds too easy.

I have to more than 'tap' my cap back on. It takes a few forcefull blows from a 1.5lb brass hammer to get it seated propperly. If yours is 'tapping' back on, it's too loose. tweak the lip like suggested above.

Actually it can if you have a mis-match on the birfield/drive flange.

We had a 93 in here a couple weeks ago and it was popping the dust cap off. An inspection revealed that the vehicle had recently had a birfield replaced and the installer did not also install the new taller drive flange to go along with it. The long birf combined with the short flange would knock the cap off when the birf moved outward.

This vehicle could possibly have the same issue.

If this vehicle has factory birfs in it they will have paint marks on the end under the dust cap. If the paint is pink the birf is short and if it's green the birf is long.

If it's green you will need a 43421-60040 drive flange to go with it.

Damn your good!! How much for the taller drive flange and a new cap? I'm headed home right now and will get back tomorrow with the news, pink or green. I do know that the front right has had some work done to it before she bought it, so this is probably the problem.

The flange lists for $53.02 and runs a mudder $39.76. The cap lists for $3.32 and nets out at $2.49.

Caps / Drive Flanges

I replaced my CV's and drive flanges with the longer "7mm" and found that the dust caps were loose on the new flanges.
A bit of tin bashing was required to shrink them so that they fit firmly.

Down here in NZ it is also recomended to use a bit of silicone sealant when fitting them as they are NOT water tight and we all know what water does to bearings!!

After further inspection...........it does have the green birfield in it. Also the inside of the dust cap has interference marks from the birfield. So....Dan I need the new flange and new dust cap!
