It isn't totaled because there is no claim against it...liability only. I am getting FEMA money .

As for plans...cutting the top, yes. Cage? yes. I am also working on a design for a custom marine canvas top with roll up/zipper windows. I am waiting to see what I can get for $ and a WVO diesel may be in the wings.

The coating did not crack or peel in any of the crush areas...that stuff is too cool.

Ouch. As everyone said, glad you're OK and seem to take it with stride. I would be heartbroken, especially with all the money and time you've been putting into it. My 80's parked next to a brick wall and I often think about the next big shaker here in CA...

That is exactly what would have happened to my truck had I not had the tire carrier.

Everyone is okay. Whew.

What a shame that a vehicle with so much history and travel had to meet it's end. However, what a fitting end for such an adventure truck...killed by a tornado.

Wow.

Not the end of that junk, just another chapter! And I bet this chapter is in the beginning of a very long novel.

I can't believe this! I go in/out the hospital for 5 months only to get out and see this? I wanna come up and help the build!

I've always wondered how an 80 would look as a crew cab with a short bed in back. I even thought about it when my roof was crushed, but the back of the roof was OK, and there was no justification for the extra work.
The C pillar (behind the rear doors) would be strong enough if you add some bracing, like an internal roll bar inside the body. Or maybe an external cage with a roof rack on it. I considered that one too.
Having built a rollover, I have a pretty good idea of how the roof is built. It would not be that hard to do. Where did you say you live? Sounds like fun to build!

X3, but I'm kinda glad it happened b/c my rig is much lighter and flexible in the rocks. Not nearly as much pucker factors as before.

Lucky for you, I've got a plasma now, and some recent experience in the top-chopping sector.

Let me know how I can help!

I was thinking of a cleaner crew than that. More of a closed cab, no wind, weld up the seams and fit & finish. Smooth the body and shoot some real paint. Like with a shine. More of a factory finished kind of product.
I can do that, without the hillbilly effect.
I have brought several rare vehicles back from the brink, to put it mildly. I do not hack roofs and replace them with tubing. That is not acceptable.
A locked LC 80 is amoung the rare trucks that deserve rebuilding. I have repaired one that had a crushed roof and left side. The roof was crushed down 6&
