93 tranny issues

Has 215k 93.

Tranny has been flawless. Fluids have been changed regularly.

Just drove it through the mountains this week with no issues. Get in this morning and have to get on the gas a little. It slips. Only slips at high rpms when changing gears. Nothing under 4k. Didn't notice it in 1st to 2nd only 2nd to 3rd. Can pretty much peg the engine when changing gears. Assuming I keep my foot off the skinny pedal it works just fine.

Not good though.

Ideas or suggestions to try.

Has been good to me up until now.

Yeah. I'm good there. Fluid has about 15k on it.

Have you made any adjustment to the kickdown cable yet before or after the problem?

According to my FSM ('92) this is what the A/T General Troubleshooting section says:

Problem:
Slips on 1-2, 2-3 or 3-O/D up-shift, or slips or shudders on acceleration.

Possible cause:
Manual Linkage out of adjustment
Throttle cable out of adjustment
Valve body fault
Transmission fault

Also, Did you keep the tranny out of overdrive in the mountains?

FWIW My Throttle Valve Cable took a dump this weekend.

Somehow the cable was crossing over to the throttle or cruise control cable cradle and not letting the RPM's drop, Unless I tapped the throttle a few times.
I will be replacing mine very soon.

Check the throttle position sensor cable, if it's a bit slack you'd get slipping like that. Chances are it's slipping a bit on other changes and you're not noticing so I'd check it out soon so you're clutch plates don't get more worn out.

I've had two cables go bad on me. The first time I carried on driving the truck for about 6 months like it, manual shifting to avoid the judder on some gear changes. What I didn't realise at the time was not enough pressure was being put on the clutch plates because the valve body / ECU was being told light/no throttle was being applied. It wore the clutch plates out and cost me a rebuild ... I would advise you not to make the same mistake I did

The cable is a bit of a PITA to change but nowhere near as bad as a tranny rebuild.

I think checking the throttle position sensor cable adjustment should be regular PM to keep your clutch plates in good shape.

I'd go with the cable adjustment as well - particularly since there are no other symptoms and good care.
