I think it needs to be inside something. Maybe building a small waterproof box to put it in. It does have electrical components that might be damaged by exposure. The heat exchanger fins are rather fine as well, easily bent. It is a great unit though and keep the water a pretty even temp between on and off cycles for the shower.
