R12 conversion to R134-a

Hi All,

I have a 92 that recently started blowing warm. I checked the little window and it appears to be empty. I doubt I have a leak I think I just need to refill.

Questions:

1) What would be the correct way to convert to R134-a?

2) Is there any other options?

3) Any opinions would be appreciated. I have read the FAQ and there is alot of different opinions. I was just hoping for a fresh take on the subject.

Thanks,

HEFE

Go to a shop or a specific A/C repair specialist that you trust and ask them to convert yours to 134a. I wouldn't tackle this one at home. Just my 2 cents.

Hefe,

I did the conversion my self. Not too tuff. http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-te...not-r134a.html My posts include pics and some info about parts from autozone. My A/C is still blowing super cold (almost a year later). No leaks.

Its not tough at all, assuming your freon IS indeed all gone then its a matter of trying to get out as much as the oil as possible and replacing with R134a PAG oil. Then replace all the o-rings to the green hard pressed neoprene o-rings (at least they were green years ago), change the receiver dryer. The dessicant bag in the R12 isn't compatible with R134. Then install the new R134 filler ports that go over the R12 schraeder valve ports. Then just use the standard R134 kit with hoses/gauges and just follow the instructions. I've done a few of these conversions and so far no problems.

Its not hard to change to 134. I would stick with R12 if possible. In my experience, 134 conversions don't work as well. Of course, I live in Arizona. If you do convert, be careful not to put to much oil in the system. 134s are very sensitive to pressure, if you over oil the system, you will not be able to get enough freon to cool effectively.

Well, ahhh, mmmm, where the heck do you think it went ?
Do you think it's hiding from you ?
If it's low/empty, then of course you have a leak...

One other thing that has happend to me in the past with other rigs is the heater valve gets opened and then the connecting wire to the slider inside falls off the valve. While its likely you have a leak...esp. if there is no fluid flow in the reciever/dryer, you may wamt to take a quick look under the hood close to the fire wall.
